What happens when this thing goes on the move? 350 square miles of ice floating free in the southern ocean is one thing. When it moves north what kind of damage are we looking at?
It is obvious so far no one that posted bothered to read the story, so I will explain, about every ten years this happens, a glacier is a river of ice that moves from the interior, it grows! and because it is moving into warmer waters it breaks off this repeats every decade. go back and read the story don't just read enough to allow yourself to get all puffy! you will blow up for nothing. personally I wish the continent that used to de covered with vegetation would hurry up and thaw out so we can go down there and enjoy it. Just like it used to be before the damn Ice Age.
Apparently they didn't notice the far left edge, which obviously is where it broke last time. This is a yawn. These guys are never happy. They whine when the glaciers are receding and they are terrified when they are expanding. Whichever way it goes, glaciers, storms, temperature, etc. It's the dreaded global warming to blame. Sigh!
Apparently I've forgotten how to count or divide or something. 2001 to 2007. Hmmm. I keep getting 6. 2007 to 2012. Well shoot... I keep getting 5. Curiouser and curiouser! Maybe it's a cycle of 2 glaciers every 10 years and the article failed to articulate!
I live in Montana please some one explain why I should care about some rich people that just mite have to move away from the coast do to "GLOBAL WARMING"
it gets down to 30 below in the winter here so what do I care if it only go's to 20 below.
I think we're all gonna die! Just like we did in 2001 and 2007! Unlike calved ice from the north, southern ice rarely even reach shipping lanes much less inhabitated coastlines.
Harry- It melts. To give you some sense of how it works, occasionally an iceberg makes it to Australia. It's not a big deal.
I think it's interesting that the scientists are saying that it's natural, not global warming/climate change/human influence/what ever flavor you are selling today.
In Antarctica, where summer is beginning, sea ice extent is presently above average. After a particularly slow ice loss rate at the beginning of the month, Antarctic sea ice extent was unusually high through much of December, in particular in the northern Ross Sea and the eastern Weddell Sea.
Please,if an iceberg FLOATS,it doesn't raise the level of the ocean anymore than it already is! Sorry about ending the sentence in a preposition, but I would have said F#$# you,you ignor@#$ b@#$%^d if I thought it would make any difference
Please,if an iceberg FLOATS,it doesn't raise the level of the ocean anymore than it already is!
Good, that is taught in freshman science class.
Now, let's get to a sophomore science class:
Question: how much of the ice is underwater? Answer: about 6/7 to 7/8s of the total mass of the ice.
Question: What happens to the ice when it melts? Answer: It causes the ocean to rise, slightly, but to rise.
Now, let's get to a junior science class:
Question: What happens to the glacial ice if it melts before it gets to the sea? Answer: The melt water causes the ocean to rise, a bit more than slightly, but to rise.
Now, let's get to a senior science class:
Question: What happens if all of the Arctic Ice and most of the Greenland Glaciers melt? Answer: There is tremendous ocean level rise followed by a very distinct change in the movement of the ocean currents that have been shown to have a compounding effect of temporarily causing global air temperatures to rise followed very soon by the beginning of a new ice age.
Imagine what someone would learn if they went on to university and studied climate science. I bet those folks would know a lot more about ice melts than most of us.
Imagine what someone would learn if they went on to university and studied climate science. I bet those folks would know a lot more about ice melts than most of us.
Apparently not. That's why they can't accurately predict weather and more so they can't accurately predict climate. They just make guesses that are worded in language that most of us don't use regularly. Sometimes they (climatologists/scientists) will coin a new word or phrase just to prevent us from knowing what they really don't have a clue as to why something happens.
The problem with the east and west coast going in the drink, they will all want to move to Texas.
I'm at 900' elevation and looking foreward to having ocean front property.
As for all the snarkey people who wouldn't move here, good.
Stay where your at, pop some popcorn, and watch a hollywood movie.
Somebody needs to go back and take sixth grade science over again.
Thats the one where the teacher shows you a frozen cup full of water where the ice extends above the cup.
Then, at the end of the day when all the ice has melted the water is below the level of the cup.
Water expands as it freezes and is most dense at approximately 39 degrees. If it didn't, lakes would freeze from the bottom up and most fish would die.
Or are these scientific facts just more "inconvenient truth"?
The phrase "Eureka" mean anything to either one of you
Well, the WORD Eureka is the state motto for California, so yeah, it does mean something to me. But in the historical context, eureka is Greek and is attributed to Archimedes finding the purity of gold - WTF does eureka have to do with water: frozen or not.
Ain't seen a burning flag since Viet Nam. And I know as many (or more) right wing tokers as I do left wing tokers. But what do facts have to do with anything?
@Ferrosynthesis-3490482 - Havent been following the Occupy movement have you... Multiple confirmed flag burrnings, with many more (unsubstantiated, but likely) reported.
Lighting a bong with a flag is a bit of an overkill and most likely, dangerous. I'm sure it was quite a sight.
Ferro, you are right about one thing. Left wing democrats started the prohibition back in 1937. Since then it's been nothing but hot air from both sides.
90 % of the pollution comes from those big coastal cities if they sink then this so called problem will solve itself, see it will all work out. children! as the Ice age recedes naturally and a shrinkage occurs there is more land exposed and it attracts heat from the sun, this is natural, then more plants grow on the land, this is natural, when the added vegetation dies and decomposes it creates more carbon in the atmosphere, this is normal, the more the ice melts the faster it melts, this is normal, there are dozens of factors at work here, man is only one and a small% at that, one natural disaster will have more effect than man ever dreamed possible, what is going on has been going on for ever, it freezes it thaws then it freezes again, and whatever you try to do to change this cycle will not change what is happening. I admit there is a problem with air quality, but all the winning in the world wont change the fact that Ice ages do come and do go, and come back again. there is allot of money to be made on these scare tactics being dealt, just take a minute and think about it, and it also keeps your mind off the things you can do something about. you want to fix the problem as you see it stop having babies.
Hey woodsyboy, why don't you shut up and keep your political opinions to yourself. You rightweenies always try to turn every story into a polictial one. I can't help it if you have crap for candidates to choose from. Stop being so jealous.
Sounds like this is supposed to happen according to Mother Nature....Makes me wonder how many times our earth has warmed up and cooled off...looks like we're warming up again...no matter what Al Gore says, it's nature...
For the ump-teenth time, Al Gore is a politician and NOT a scientist!! All he was trying to do was get a message out to the general public about a situation that can/will effect a great many of us! Period!
Yes, calving of glaciers is a natural process but it's the pace that these changes, as well as MANY others, are happening which is the problem.
If Al Gore really wanted to get the message across or believed what he says about global warming, why does he fly everywhere on a private jet and leave his giant SUV running while flying his private jet? Why doesn't he give up his mansion that uses more energy in on month than most third world countries use in one year?
Robert - The fact that you just made that up off the top of your head makes you a hypocrite. Rather than spreading hate, you should try spreading information.
watch carbon nation it is a eye opener. though I do think the climate goes through change similar to a long drawn out tided. I do see the science of how we have made global impact on the climate. Coral reefs for example Msnbc had a article on august 17th how coral was being impacted by humans. that 50% had been destroyed in the last 15yrs. It would be interesting to know how much had be destroyed before then. is that 50% of a 100%, 85%, .... National geographic had a article also about a different avenue that the reefs are being affected by deforestation across a ocean is allow spores to travel through on wind currents, that had been normal caught by the trees to land on the coral reefs which also started killing them off. Coral reefs play a huge role in weather, and fish life . coral reef provide storm breaks to the land (more storm damage, more cost). Plus the water is starting to become unsuitable for the corals which is also killing them. This is one example of many things, it all adds up. it makes longterm sense to pay attention to our water, air, soil, trees. All impact climate in big ways. I just don't see the longterm with the way things have been going.
Tom, the info from Robert was reported in either the news or a National Geographic or Discovery channel show. Apparently, Gore didn't have any objections to it. Otherwise, we all would have heard from it.
Here's a couple "specifics" for you. Overpopulation. Air pollution. Water pollution. Increased energy production/usage. Deforestation. Acidification of the oceans. Accelerated glacial melts across the globe. Coral reef die-offs. Methane seeps from permafrost melt. That should be a good start for you.
The aquatic portion of global warming, "is not" from the atmospheric CO2 accumulations, as most scientists have wrongly assumed was the cause. But rather this thermal accumulation is from humanities massive direct thermal contribution into the waters. The unnatural thermal contributions, made by humanity have accumulated within the oceans due to the fact that the oceans have a dominant downwards, or inwards direction of conduction, combined with the fact that water is a very good natural storage facility for thermal energy. It is this aquatic thermal accumulation that has triggered the twelve fold decline in the planetary ice. Something that the CO2's could never do. The method is simply by neutralizing the normally present downwards direction of conduction within the planets colder regions, where it is the most vulnerable to being neutralized. I've done the research and controlled experiments to confirm these facts.
Take a deep breath Randall Scott. This is normal and will continue long after humans are gone. You can not change, alter or stop this natural climate change. Go back to your Geology 101 text and look at the graph of the climate for the last 500,000 years.
Randall, Where exactly did you do these tests? You do need to look at the climatic evidence. Humans can not influence the climate near as much as you credit us with. There was a warming in Europe in the 1400's that caused 2 growing seasons, do you think it was industrialization?
Uumm, Randall, what exactly are you talking about? You do realize if you stop the "downward conduction" you'll stop the thermal circulation of the oceans which in turn will do substantial harm to the planets climate. This circulation is crucial for maintaining a 'balanced' climate that's conducive for human habitation as we know it.
I'm with the others, I'd really like to know how you did your 'study' and where you did it at. Your publication is in what literature again?
And, Age, we can and are influencing the climate. When you take a material, coal, that took 200+ million years to form then release it into the atmosphere in less than 200, do you think that would not have an effect on our climate?? The "warming trend" you speak of was what came after a cooling trend that resulted from an over active volcanic period. It's how the planet tries to 'balance' itself. What we're experiencing now is NOT a 'balancing' act but a forced change induced, in good part, by us.
yes there is a difference between natural greenhouse gases and unnatural greenhouse gases. thank you........ but I do realize that a geologist working for the natural gas fracturing corporations is much smarter than a scientist working for NASA.
I would differ, it is not the CO2 from coal that has had the effect but rather the Methane produced by decomposition. And if you do the research you will find that volcanic activity is up this past century. How does that effect your thoughts? Beyond a global nuclear event humans can not effect the climate to any scale as does the cycles of the star solar. This does not preclude our, human, effects on the surface, but the core effects are cyclical.
I also conducted my own experiment reagrding water's ability to store thermal energy as you said. In an extremely controlled environment: I put scalding hot water in a glass, waited ten minutes and tested..it was warm, waited ten more minutes it was less warm but then after ten more minutes something amazing happened...it became room temperature.
WOW what an amazing ability to store the thermal energy.
Your half baked theory isn't totally asinine. If you were to continue dumping hot water into the ocean it would in fact alter the average water temperature but you would have to introduce enough new water to overcome the amount that is naturally evaporated to make a real change. Why dont you put a hose from your water heater into the Atlantic for a few years and let us know how it works out. OOPS.... I forgot about the thousands of natural fissures in the bottom of the ocean that are already doing that exact same thing. Man you are going to have one hell of a water bill if you are going to try to trump those.
I have a idea lets take all the money pissed away on this worthless research that we cant do anything about (like change the weather) and go to the moon, to hell with all these wars and fear of climate change lets just move. that we can do! We can do a star trek and make space babies.
Randall Scott did you also take into consideration the more activee thermal activity under the oceans coming from increased volcanic activity? all over the Pacific!no I don't believe that was in your study or you would have mentioned it. heat has a tendency to rise, I don't know of instances where the oceans do a turnover, some passive exchange can be expected, but not to that extent lets see some facts. and don't use areas where there are strong currents. it seems to me all these studies are geared for getting more funding. lets face it if diving was my passion I would find a way to make it my life. and that means grant money.
wow unbelievable how people can say climate is not effected by humans. 98% of the scientists that work with it day in and day out disagree with you. Wiki global warming.
Age, your post doesn't affect my thoughts at all. The reason we are seeing more methane released into the atmosphere is because the planet is warming thus melting the permafrost and releasing it. It's not only the burning of coal but of all fossil fuels that's releasing CO2 into the environment. Besides, the type of CO2 released from volcanoes does not remain in the atmosphere as long as what we burn. Also, volcanoes release SO2 which has a cooling effect. You seem to be one of those that says one volcano releases more greenhouse gasses than all of humanity, is that correct?
Yes, I fully understand the Earth goes through cycles. But, for the past 10 or so years the sun has been in a lull. However, the average global temps have been on the rise. The sun has just recently began going into its maximum phase, so what do you think is going to happen now?
And to say a growing human population, over the past 200+ years, has had zero effect on our climate is simply foolish. You think cutting huge swaths of forest, damming rivers, pumping and digging untold amounts of fuel and resources out of the ground, and building ever larger cities does nothing to the planets climate???
Tim: I thinks i'll ignore you, "the factsman". Looks like you ben through too much govt schoolin.
GarrettB: Your thoughts don't affect, effect or make me feel any different. Ride your bike or take the belching bus (or "high speed train").
Untill either of you go self sufficient (I'm sure nither could) make sure you have enough Cornell toilet tisue and a Mommy to wipe your egomastic wanabees.
Look up the word "humdrum".
Other than that, zsdfoighasrluakybkuhlasygkv;aergkuasglasb,ja.sekzsdf b.SLsd.
Gotta go with spunkee's research...in fact, I just confirmed it independently: My coffee got cold while I was reading this! Guess I need to "introduce more thermal energy" to it...
tomtexas you are right we should all just stick our fingers in our ears and say "lalalalalalala I don't hear you" that will surely solve all of our problems.
Wow, found the crazy ice munchers again. A frozen planet is not normal ice munchers!! Go live with your precious polar bears. We don't need your retarded concern and panic. Go
Tom, you seem to be one of those that think Japan got hit by an earthquake and Katrina hit New Orleans because it's gods way of punishing the wicked. Or perhaps you think the moon landing was faked? How about the holocaust and the millions of Jew's killed didn't happen either? In other words it's pointless to talk to someone such as you because no matter how low brow I explained it to you it would still be over your head.
One last thing, there's a little button on the far right with letters and a 'check' sign, I'd suggest you try using it once in a while.
NASA would disagree with you, but you are smarter I'm sure.I hope you are right. and everyone else with a functioning brain is wrong. we are in the test tube , so you better be!
I like NASA too. A few years back they released a report that said the climate on Mars was changing too, that it was getting hotter. Now I might not be as smart as you think you are, but it seems to me unlikely that human caused pollution on this planet is causing problems on other planets as well. Could it be that there might be a common denominator, say, oh what could it be...the sun?
We are going through the dark rift as well the earth is under different gravitational pull, so is the rest of the system, so that can cause tension and more volcanic activity, generated by friction, solar activity has been more active in the past 16 years because of this, there is a possible polar shift change, these things all add to the puzzle and they are not in the green studies, so what can I say its a much bigger picture than someone measuring ice thickness that's been melting for 11,500 years. and they are basing it on 200 years of records. over a span of billions of years. and the records are not accurate by today'sstandards. how many of these scientist are qualified in every one of the fields pertaining to this so called event, the answer is not one, it would take all of them combined, and that will never happen because all they would do is argue with each other. so drop it your here for the ride enjoy it. your complaining about spilled milk before its spilled.
What makes you think there was a place called Antarctica when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth. (Remember that weird science called Plate Tectonics and a massive continent called Pangaea that eventually broke apart into what we now call the continents!)
And that was roughly >65 million years ago, not 6.5 thousand years ago.
This is the problem with arguing with people who think the world is only 6,000 years old (because supposedly that's what the bible tells them). They think that admitting that global warming is real is a denunciation of their religion, which is something they would rather be thought stupid than do.
Case in point. The mainstream scientific community openly admitted on a number of occasions that the planetary ice was melting over ten times faster than their CO2 related predictions. Rather than investigate the thermal dynamics of the aquatic environment and the potential affects of an unnatural aquatic thermal buildup on the oceans downwards direction of conduction and how that might relate to the decline in the ice. Instead these same scientists have again wrongly assumed that they know whay the ice is declining so rapidly. Without doing any research, or controlled experiments first. They've instead openly stated that they've figured it out. They've concluded, off of the top of their heads, after using their brilliant imaginations, that it must be the movement of the ice sheets or shelves themselves that is generating the additional energy from friction, to justify the increased rate of decline. That is the stupidest thing that I've ever heard. Wet ice is the slipperest substance on earth and the ice shelves would not have even started moving, if they hadn't already been melting away.
Ya, last night on a religion vs. atheism board, a kid said his buddy had proved that global warming was mathematically impossible using a pencil and paper. I'm sure you and he are both great geniuses, but for some reason I'm just not buying. Must be my little hangup, I guess.
Sorry but cunduction in the oceans would take at least an eon (1000 years) look at the loss data for the conduction graphs. Please show your work so we can evaluate.
Wrong! ice is frozen water and that means it is in fact liquid but frozen and it still moves just at a slower rate it takes it ten years to do what liquid water would do in a day. and it also evaporates, your statement does not stand up even rock will move. all tho rock is liquid in a frozen state as well.
sliperest yes I see its missing a p, so what! did you understand what the word ment? get a life. find something to do other then try to humiliate someone.
just the last statement in the article....calving event last happened in 2001 and 2007. calving from this glacier happens on a decade long cycle...um...even a roughly decade long cycle...it was 6 years between the last two and either 5 or 6 years when this one will happen...but decade cycle???
look up mean and median you might understand what the average is. In case you cant see it. When they say the average cycle is 10 years it is relative to how many times in the past 50 years like 12 this time and 8 next time.
Are you claiming dating techniques are made-up fantasy timelines, 'grow a pair'? I suppose it would be hard to date anything from the bottom of the world. I mean if you went you would fall off the end of the Earth, right? I guess you should've said what ever fits your delusional fantasy instead.
It was to show a beautiful and amazing picture. No joke, just aesthetics. But if you want to pretend it's a joke, go ahead. Somebody will laugh...somewhere!
Reminds me of the old joke: What did the captain of the titanic say when he hit the iceberg? Who ordered the ice! It's happening folks... and we can blame tail pipe emissions and co 2.
So tell me about the bicycle and the brand of shoes that's your only means of transportation. Go suck on Al's ....... Oh wait, he is most likely crossing the country on his jet to tell the folks not to do as he does.
CO2 comprises 5% of all greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Mankinds contribution to CO2 emissions is 4% of that according to NOAA. Do the math and tell me again that man's CO@ emissions are causing global warming. THe greatest source of CO2 emmissions is outgassing from large bodies of water caused by solar heating, ie., the sun. The increased CO2 in the atmosphere is caused by somehting we have no control over.
Sorry to tell you but dinosaurs were NOT around a million years ago. Try again.
And, Issac, Al Gore is a politician NOT a scientist. All he's trying to do is bring the message to the masses. I do NOT approve of his tactics, his 'do as I say not as I do' approach. It would be better to lead by example. BUT, and again, he's a politician. Go figure.
Rosco, sorry but your statement doesn't make any sense. At least not to me. The oceans are a CO2 sink, but they can only hold so much and where do you think the CO2 came from? Much of it came from natural processes, but a good portion of it came from us. All your saying is that the over abundance of CO2 being emitted from the oceans, caused by the sun, is that the CO2 we've contributed in the last 200 years is more than the oceans can handle. Thus why the oceans are becoming acidic. Also, we do indeed have control over the amount being contributed. It's going to take a LOT of work and a mindset change by a large portion of people, but it can be done. We might not be able to reverse it but we can at least slow it down.
Global warming is real, liars and deniers. Time to take action & responsibility for the sake of mankind. No more lame excuses to avoid the truth and do nothing, political representatives.
You have proof??? Please enlighten us because all the "science" I have seen has holes that point to the funder's, on both sides. Just read the climate history and then re-post.
Wally, that's true to a point. The warming oceans and the liquid water under the glaciers is also contributing to the acceleration of glaciers movement thus them calving into the oceans.
Age, also please enlighten us on your "holes that point to funders". Are you saying it has to do with where the money is coming from for these studies? Most of the studies that I've read show that clues to a changing world are accelerating. If a scientist is true to his/her self and the science at hand, it shouldn't matter where the money comes from, only what their observations tell them about what's going on.
Garrett' And there in lies the problem. Since te early 20th century science was much more pure. Have you seen the e-mails of the "climate change" scientists and their efforts to corrupt the data? Or the money poured into the opposition? If you think that mankind has such an influence on CO2 then where is the toxic red bloom of algae that would ensue? We as a species are new to this planet and as such should rely on the natural cycles that have been in existant long before us. Why aren't you decrying the hole in the ozone? is that because after review we see we were alarmists? it has a cycle. I must say that I have reviewed and researched as much as I can and find that I am open to proof that I am wrong, but in my opinion it is hubris to think that man has this much influence.
If you look at where the money comes from you will find that the findings are in line with the funders of the study. Please prove me wrong!
There were no cases where the data was corrupted or where anybody tried. You only read into those e-mails what you wanted to and what the Fox News types told you, not what was in those e-mails. Hitler was right, just lie to the uneducated and they'll accept it if you tell them what they want to believe over and over.
Just as with over-fishing, or the dumping of our trash into the oceans. People acted like it wouldn't catch up with us. Well it has. We have a very serious problem with many species of fish being endangered right now. And we have islands of garbage the size of Texas floating around that some are saying are simply to big to clean up. And still they haven't passed laws to prevent the dumping of such garbage into the open waters, not considered a method of garbage collection either. Well, mankinds aquatic thermal contamination is no different. It too has accumulated and everyone is pointing the finger elsewhere. We need laws to protect the open oceans from such unnecessary contamination.
And did you look up the volcanic activity and SO2 emissions to verify? Did you verify the thermal output of industrialization verses the solar out put? Did you look at the natural deforestation by natural disaster verses the human influence?
What ever happened to thoughtful research?
You may just fall into the category of "Sheepole".
Age, all you have to do is type in 'texas sized garbage patch in Pacific Ocean' in google and several million links pop up for your 'evidence'! Did you NOT know or ever hear about it?? I find it hard to believe that people haven't heard about it or the one in the Atlantic Ocean as well.
What does volcanic and SO2 emissions have to do with anything? What about natural deforestation verses human caused? Are you saying volcanic emissions are offsetting our CO2 output? Are you saying natural disastors are causing more deforestation than humans?? Lastly, are you saying industrialization is causing more of a heating effect than the sun?? I'll agree with you on that note if you're saying it's because of humans CO2 output, but I doubt that is in fact what you're saying.
SO2 out put far exceeds the CO2 model and is caused buy volcanic eruptions. If this is not accounted for then the models are suspect at the very least. Industrialization is much less an influence than natural occurrences. The sun is much more an influence than mankind could ever think of being.
And the link to the "garbage flotilla" does this include the debris from the "natural earth quake" in Japan that swept debris out into the ocean? And hoe deep is this island? does it equal the depth of the Saragossa sea kelp? Sensationalism is great until the facts are known. A septic system is based on the natural decomposition of what we deem waste but it is a cycle. Bacteria think of it as a bonanza and go into high gear. Think about it for just one minute.
Age, if that were true then we'd be experiencing a cooling effect rather than a warming. As I've said before, the Sun has been in a lull for the past decade or so and has just recently began to go into its maximum stage. All along the average global temps have been rising. If the Sun has such an effect, verses human caused, why would this be occurring??
The Pacific and Atlantic garbage patches far preclude the quake that happened in Japan. All the Japanese quake did was add to an already sizable 'patch' of garbage. Many of the pieces have even been found washed up on beaches along the West Coast. The extreme Western islands of the Hawiian chain are constantly pulling garbage out of the ocean in order to protect sea turtles, monk seals, and many other species of marine life.
I have thought about it, longer than "just one minute", and continue to research it and realize the problem is NOT getting any better but getting larger and not much seems to be getting done about it.
Age the island is real and was there before the quake in japan. why don't you actually look it up all you have to do is google garbage island or go to you tube and you can watch it being filmed. instead of assumeing only you can be right and if you have not heard of it has to be lies. also fyi it is about 3 stories deep.
Even if there is more CO2 from volcanos, that means nothing. The earth came to eqilibrium with that level of output, and we have now increased that output so a new warmer equilibrium is being achieved.
Purpose of the story??????????????? I guess Just to rile up the global warmers to start ranting. Ebb and flow of the universe in time is reality. Earth has warmed and cooled over its history many times. It will again. Not anything we have done. Too bad you global warmers are not so concerned about the rising US Debt. Reducing that is critical. Much more critical to our country's survival.
JB, our national debt is one thing of concern, our environment, which sustains ALL of us is a VERY BIG concern. If we pollute or destroy our environment it doesn't matter how much money we have or how much we owe ourselves or anyone else. To say we haven't done anything to cause this is as foolish as to say getting rid of NASA will cure all of our money problems. Simply NOT true.
Wally, yes that's how glaciers form and eventually calve. However, warming of the oceans and of the glaciers themselves is accelerating the flow of the glaciers and thus the calving occurences.
It will be when the ocean is lapping at your doorstep. Especially when you live 20 miles or more from the ocean. But keep ignoring it, that makes it go away.
There are cost effective methods to reduce humanities aquatic thermal footprint, and methods of compensation for that portion that we cannot easily reduce. One very serious consideration that needs to be investigated further though; is the potential that removing oil from under the ocean waters, might be increasing the natural rate in which thermal energy is being transferred between the hotter planet surface into the colder waters. This is a potentially a very serious sitsuation that we cannot afford to compensate for, if it is happening. The oil industry needs to be held accountable for answering that question and accountable for compensating for any potential thermal increases within the waters, relating to their activities.
Randall, Where did you get results from this heat transference study? I must have been in the cave too long. I had to read that five times to figure out how out there some people are. Mars, here we come. It's getting too hot here.
The loss of such deep water ice, is huge, in regards to an overall accumulative loss in natural aquatic cooling potential. This means that the ocean temperatures will most likely continue to spike upwards, unless we do something drastic soon. The deepth of such ice, cannot be replaced within a short period of time, it took thousands of years to be created. Thus, if we do not address this matter before the seas rise to critical levels, trillions of dollars of coastal real estate will be lost forever, and millions of people forced from their homes.
It's being created every winter, the seas will rise a few feet at most, and very slowly at that. Humankind will be gone for other reasons before this ever happens.
Blah Blah Blah.... Rising sea levels. Sooooo why are there Soooo many countries building Massive Cities and Super tall structures on / near their coastlines?
IF, there WAS such a concern, WHY Build these NOW famous buildings Burj Khalifa, OR Taipei 101
Claim it is man made. Mindless sheep will follow AND Gladly pay MORE TAXES.
WHERE do these NEW Taxes go? Big Fat checks to New Organizations that are formed. Putting friends and Big Political doners into these NEW positions. You just have to claim to believe this SH*T and you will have a CUSH JOB FOR LIFE
We can fix this, if only we'd address the matter. Write your congressmen and local papers to help spread the word. Maybe if people start to talk more about it, our leaders might start to pay attention. Cooling the oceans would actually be easier than cleaning up the garbage that we've dumped in it. Speak out against aquatic contamination.
I guess the garbage is the suns fault also. Heck why not just blame all pollution on the sun that way we don't have to take responsiblilty for anything.
I know this may sound crazy "BUT", with modern technology why couldn't they fill/strengthen this crack up with some kind of sealer that mixes with water ...feed it into the crack. I'm thinking like fusing it back together.
Ok now , I'm just thinking out loud ... so keep the laughs down. LOL !
Why would anyone think we need to "fix" it? This is perfectly natural occurrence that happens, according to the article, roughly every 10 years - for the last untold millions of years! It is not a cataclysmic event. And since the floating ice has ALREADY displaced its equivalent in sea water, the ocean level is not going to rise and flood Miami and New York. Try this experiment at home kids: fill a glass with ice then add water and mark the water level on the glass. Then wait for the ice to melt and note where the water level is once all the ice is melted. Guess what? Miami is safe.
These things have been happening since Antarctica moved to it's current position however many million years ago. It can't be stopped. They cause no damage. Except to unlucky ocean liners on their maiden voyage and that's only in the North Atlantic. What will be interesting to see is how long till this one calves again. If it's been shown to be on a roughly 10 yr cycle and the next one breaks free in 6-8 yrs. What does that say, if anything, about climate change? What if it takes 15 yrs?
What happens when this thing goes on the move? 350 square miles of ice floating free in the southern ocean is one thing. When it moves north what kind of damage are we looking at?
Better hope you don't live in a coastal area is all I can say
Humans suck!!
Harry, you can check 2001 and 2007 to see the impact :)
Sigh!
This ice fracture could change everything......!!!!!
Sure. Whatever you say.
if it happens every ten years ,why did it say it has happened 3 times in ten years?
Apparently I've forgotten how to count or divide or something. 2001 to 2007. Hmmm. I keep getting 6. 2007 to 2012. Well shoot... I keep getting 5. Curiouser and curiouser! Maybe it's a cycle of 2 glaciers every 10 years and the article failed to articulate!
Hey; where's my article on human made Global Pollution?
I guess the news agencies can't find any human caused pollution. Damn natural pollution cycles.
Kornfed - for a second there I though you might need a hug - but I see you're starting to snap out of it :)
Wow, the earth must be going to hell in a hand basket.
We're all going to die......someday......Don't kid yourself.
Where is Al Gore when you need him the most.
I'm sure he's imortal and living it up on this news.
Kornfed
my Hover stopped sucking.
Maybe you could vacuum my dirt floor.
kornfed - Take a deep breath and exhale slowly, it won't seem quite so bad in the morning. :)
I live in Montana please some one explain why I should care about some rich people that just mite have to move away from the coast do to "GLOBAL WARMING"
it gets down to 30 below in the winter here so what do I care if it only go's to 20 below.
G.W is a good thing bring it on
Looks like I don't need my Subaru anymore.
Too bad BofA, Goldman Sacks, et. al. don't have their headquarters there. Not to mention anyone else who diminishes our quality of life.
It's coming here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What? No comments that global warming is a myth? Get ready for Ocean Front Property in Ohio! And New Mexico! Bye, bye East and West Coast!
What's that old saying? "There are no global warming deniers on Ocean Front Property in New Mexico"
In Antarctica, where summer is beginning, sea ice extent is presently above average. After a particularly slow ice loss rate at the beginning of the month, Antarctic sea ice extent was unusually high through much of December, in particular in the northern Ross Sea and the eastern Weddell Sea.
"However, the calving iceberg itself is the result of a cyclical process, not climate change, scientists say'
Calves off the bottom, more snow and ice fall up top.
Thank you science...for becoming political
and thank politicians for also being scientists
Please,if an iceberg FLOATS,it doesn't raise the level of the ocean anymore than it already is! Sorry about ending the sentence in a preposition, but I would have said F#$# you,you ignor@#$ b@#$%^d if I thought it would make any difference
Umm, "is" is a verb, not a preposition... :-)
I post, there for I is...lol.
Webster says Bondy is correct.
Good, that is taught in freshman science class.
Now, let's get to a sophomore science class:
Now, let's get to a junior science class:
Now, let's get to a senior science class:
Imagine what someone would learn if they went on to university and studied climate science. I bet those folks would know a lot more about ice melts than most of us.
Apparently not. That's why they can't accurately predict weather and more so they can't accurately predict climate. They just make guesses that are worded in language that most of us don't use regularly. Sometimes they (climatologists/scientists) will coin a new word or phrase just to prevent us from knowing what they really don't have a clue as to why something happens.
Glad someone made it to the senior class, we now have the answer, another Ice Age is on the way to the rescue, don't worry it will get cold again.
More like 'Inconsistent Truth'
hahaha BobW. You nailed it man
Michael in sj and Bobw: The phrase "Eureka" mean anything to either one of you gene pool dropouts?
BobW;you can't have it both ways..... either it's water or ice,not "frozen water" or "melted ice". Thanks for the STEAM though!
R.Bondy
Well, the WORD Eureka is the state motto for California, so yeah, it does mean something to me. But in the historical context, eureka is Greek and is attributed to Archimedes finding the purity of gold - WTF does eureka have to do with water: frozen or not.
The "phrase" "Eureka" means "I have found it" So much for your california education.
I thought "I Found It" was that bumper sticker in the 80's that the new fad "Born Again" movement coined?
I thought it was related to the "Where's the beef" commercial.
The left-wingers caused this, burning all of those flags and polluting the atmosphere by toking all of the time.
Nope, it's the right-wingers releasing all of that hot air
Ain't seen a burning flag since Viet Nam. And I know as many (or more) right wing tokers as I do left wing tokers. But what do facts have to do with anything?
Hey Ferro,
It's Obama's fault........................
@Ferrosynthesis-3490482 - Havent been following the Occupy movement have you... Multiple confirmed flag burrnings, with many more (unsubstantiated, but likely) reported.
Nope, not me. I put ice in my bong!
I've seen bongs lit with burning flags.
Ferro; there were more Right-wing workers at my old UNION job than Lefties...Righties post first and only think when it's too late.
You do realize it is very, very hard to light the stuff when it is cold/wet!
Hey woodsyboy, why don't you shut up and keep your political opinions to yourself. You rightweenies always try to turn every story into a polictial one. I can't help it if you have crap for candidates to choose from. Stop being so jealous.
Worried about CO2 emissions? Plant trees! Mother nature's own CO2 scrubbers!
Jealous?
I love Penguins... I hope this doesn't impact them too much...
At least the penguins are still safe from Polar Bears.
Yup looks like some occupiers have burned flags. Not too smart, just gives the red meaters something to chew on.
R3V017N0W, banned. Flame out.
Sounds like this is supposed to happen according to Mother Nature....Makes me wonder how many times our earth has warmed up and cooled off...looks like we're warming up again...no matter what Al Gore says, it's nature...
When the polar bears start breaking into your fridge and stealing your ice cubes, you'll believe.. oh yeah, count on it!
and she'll be the first one demanding to know why the government didn't do something about it. Mark my words.
For the ump-teenth time, Al Gore is a politician and NOT a scientist!! All he was trying to do was get a message out to the general public about a situation that can/will effect a great many of us! Period!
Yes, calving of glaciers is a natural process but it's the pace that these changes, as well as MANY others, are happening which is the problem.
gramma is smarter than NASA. with all their fancy ice core samples and satellite imagery.
Garret,
Please explain "MANY" just exactly where is the human caused problem? Cite specifics please.
http://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/
http://climate.nasa.gov/keyIndicators/
What's happening right now is NOT natural. If you still don't believe it, you need to go back to school.
If Al Gore really wanted to get the message across or believed what he says about global warming, why does he fly everywhere on a private jet and leave his giant SUV running while flying his private jet? Why doesn't he give up his mansion that uses more energy in on month than most third world countries use in one year?
Al Gore is a hypocrite.
Robert - The fact that you just made that up off the top of your head makes you a hypocrite. Rather than spreading hate, you should try spreading information.
maybe just demand better solutions.
watch carbon nation it is a eye opener. though I do think the climate goes through change similar to a long drawn out tided.
To: Doug
The polar bears are in my freezer.
Cut and quartered.
Makes great stew meat.
I just went to craigslist and saw some arctic ice chunks for sale.
Some where around the equator.
Better get some while the goin is good.
Doug: My refrigerator and freezer are polar bear proof ever since I quit drinking Coke...everyone KNOWS that's what they're after!!
Wow tomtexas you are soooo clever?
Polar bear rugs is where its at!
I've done the research and controlled experiments to confirm these facts.
you should tell someone
Randall Scott-2803782 - so we should believe you and not the scientists? Yeah, right!!!
Show me the publication, it sounds like it may be entertaining.
There is none.
Take a deep breath Randall Scott. This is normal and will continue long after humans are gone. You can not change, alter or stop this natural climate change. Go back to your Geology 101 text and look at the graph of the climate for the last 500,000 years.
Well said Redneck!
It must have been industrialisation!! That's the global warming that sunk the land bridge from Russia to Alaska, after all.
GarrettB,
I would differ, it is not the CO2 from coal that has had the effect but rather the Methane produced by decomposition.
Do you mean "humanity's" thermal contribution? And just what is humanity's thermal contribution? What does that even mean?
Greg,
Wow day in and day out, and who pays their bills? The sun verses mankind, who would win?
http://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/
http://climate.nasa.gov/keyIndicators/
Stop ignoring the facts and get an education.
Good one GarrettB LMAO. It's really a non-debate but we continue to see them posting. Unreal.
msnbc please review grow a pair posts. Good candidate for ban.
Oh yes everything is global warming right. Dinosaurs once lived
in Antartica. Gore and the Illumanati wont give up in their
quest for YOUR TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS
Continue to demonstrate your ignorance. It is entertaining!
NASA would disagree with you, but you are smarter I'm sure.I hope you are right. and everyone else with a functioning brain is wrong. we are in the test tube , so you better be!
Hey 1surrviivor,
I like NASA too.
Michael, so what is the rate of plate movement? Find out, then calulate that movement times 65 million. Now try and date your dinosaurs!
I've seen some big cracks in my hay day, but that's huge !!
if it splits off when there is sunlight there will be rainbows
:)
It summer down there, equivalent to August here in Northern Hemisphere
Yeah, it is entertaining.
Randall,
Sorry but cunduction in the oceans would take at least an eon (1000 years) look at the loss data for the conduction graphs. Please show your work so we can evaluate.
"Slipperest"? Seriously? If you want me or others to believe your writings, you'd better run spell check, at a minimum.
Wrong! ice is frozen water and that means it is in fact liquid but frozen and it still moves just at a slower rate it takes it ten years to do what liquid water would do in a day. and it also evaporates, your statement does not stand up even rock will move. all tho rock is liquid in a frozen state as well.
sliperest yes I see its missing a p, so what! did you understand what the word ment? get a life. find something to do other then try to humiliate someone.
post 9.6 error I erased that and it still came up sorry.
Buck
What? What's this dark rift? Rift in what? And the sun has been quiet the past 10 years. What are you talking about?
Don't bother Randall his is deeply involved in solving aquatic environment issues. LMAO
just the last statement in the article....calving event last happened in 2001 and 2007. calving from this glacier happens on a decade long cycle...um...even a roughly decade long cycle...it was 6 years between the last two and either 5 or 6 years when this one will happen...but decade cycle???
Glad I am not the only one who noticed that.
The key word is ROUGHLY
A "decades cycle" is within 10 years, as opposed to annual.
look up mean and median you might understand what the average is. In case you cant see it. When they say the average cycle is 10 years it is relative to how many times in the past 50 years like 12 this time and 8 next time.
So called science, carbon dating 2,200 years to 2.2 million, ah whatever fits their fantasy.
Are you claiming dating techniques are made-up fantasy timelines, 'grow a pair'? I suppose it would be hard to date anything from the bottom of the world. I mean if you went you would fall off the end of the Earth, right? I guess you should've said what ever fits your delusional fantasy instead.
There comes a point physically at which it has to "break" off, otherwise it would eventually extend to the equator.
I was saying the same thing this morning on the toilet....
So, no news here, just a BS headline designed to grab attention. It's like the RIAA and MPAA have taken over (PMS)NBC. What a joke.
It was to show a beautiful and amazing picture. No joke, just aesthetics. But if you want to pretend it's a joke, go ahead. Somebody will laugh...somewhere!
Ha ha ha!! Oh! Sorry. I was thinking of Jungs 'peter'! Sorry everyone, couldn't resist.
Reminds me of the old joke: What did the captain of the titanic say when he hit the iceberg? Who ordered the ice! It's happening folks... and we can blame tail pipe emissions and co 2.
And when it happened a million years ago it was dinosaur farts.
We might not be able to reverse it but we can at least slow it down.
issac just because al is a hypocrite does not mean some of what he said isn't true.
Global warming is real, liars and deniers. Time to take action & responsibility for the sake of mankind. No more lame excuses to avoid the truth and do nothing, political representatives.
"However, the calving iceberg itself is the result of a cyclical process, not climate change, scientists say'
Calves off the bottom, more snow and ice fall up top.
kris,]\
You have proof??? Please enlighten us because all the "science" I have seen has holes that point to the funder's, on both sides. Just read the climate history and then re-post.
Global warming is a farce it is a way for all these big global companies dealing in green to rip off the poor and ignorant.
Research climategate! The sun actually drives the climate.
Agewithout wisdom, the proof has been out there for some time:
An Inconvenient Truth, by Al Gore, copyright 2006
By the way, your handle, 'Agewithout wisdom' says it all... funny and pitiful at the same time.
kris, I thought with y2k and all you wouldn't be using computers, or did the lie not pan out for you so now your on this panic wagon?
Age without
There were no cases where the data was corrupted or where anybody tried.
You've gotta define your terms, otherwise you're spouting gibberish.
Randall,
post the link to google maps that shows the island as large as Texas. Otherwise it is non-sense. Back it up!
Here you go moron, look it up yourself, it was real hard.
ekellar,
Thanks for a non link. And really, Moron show me how I'm a moron for not taking "evidence" with out verification.
ekeller,
And did you look up the volcanic activity and SO2 emissions to verify?
Garett,
SO2 out put far exceeds the CO2 model and is caused buy volcanic eruptions.
SO2 cools things.
Even if there is more CO2 from volcanos, that means nothing. The earth came to eqilibrium with that level of output, and we have now increased that output so a new warmer equilibrium is being achieved.
Very simple thermodynamics.
Yup...close your eyes, it's so much prettier when you can imagine what you want it to be rather than what it is.
"However, the calving iceberg itself is the result of a cyclical process, not climate change, scientists say'
Calves off the bottom, more snow falls higher up and becomes ice, which flows downhill over time. Pretty normal and periodic occurence.
I see just as many people denouncing it ranting here too.
Seems you all are here fighting for scraps to throw at each other.
It's actually kind of sad.
We're gonna need a bigger boat!
A piece of ice breaks free.. yawn... nothing new under the sun... this isn't even news.
They should just write it off as a total loss and buy us a new planet...
Randall,
Deep water Ice???? Ice floats to the top. I think you may have failed Geophysics and thermal dynamics, if you ever took them.
Do you propose a big umbrella? The sun heats the ocean at a rate that mankind could not equal.
LOL !
Anyone got any better ideas ! ; )
Duct tape
A bid tube of super glue, bonds everything.
i don't see why they couldn't fix it
LMAO duct tape
Hey Eastside-ChicagoGal,
NO laughing here. But I think your post indicates you are extremely hot. Am I right?
Why would anyone think we need to "fix" it? This is perfectly natural occurrence that happens, according to the article, roughly every 10 years - for the last untold millions of years! It is not a cataclysmic event. And since the floating ice has ALREADY displaced its equivalent in sea water, the ocean level is not going to rise and flood Miami and New York. Try this experiment at home kids: fill a glass with ice then add water and mark the water level on the glass. Then wait for the ice to melt and note where the water level is once all the ice is melted. Guess what? Miami is safe.
Who needs an ice cube?
These things have been happening since Antarctica moved to it's current position however many million years ago. It can't be stopped. They cause no damage. Except to unlucky ocean liners on their maiden voyage and that's only in the North Atlantic. What will be interesting to see is how long till this one calves again. If it's been shown to be on a roughly 10 yr cycle and the next one breaks free in 6-8 yrs. What does that say, if anything, about climate change? What if it takes 15 yrs?
Roughly means average, a better word for what they are trying to say. Might be as long as 15, might be as short as 7.
Read Fingerprints of the Gods by Graham Hancock. Interesting theory about Antarctica's relocation in there.
Get some duct tape and fix the crack... simple solution to the problem.
