An even worse job? Thus, the 'penalty' is AN EVEN BIGGER BONUS!
Don't worry if they don't make money, the US government will take your money and give it to Citigroup for those bonuses for a bad job. It is 'necessary!' Just ask all your Republicans and Democrats!
You folks need to stop bank hopping every time you get fu-ked by your bank, any bank and lawyer up. It is time to hold these institution's feet to the fire, with one class action after another, until all of their money is back in circulation. Sure, the lawyers will get most of it, but at least they will purchase durable goods, which will help the economy.
Manipulating URL strings is not hacking, and is considered stupid-rule number one to guard against by web developers, hence, I hope they get sued for incompetence. (Outsource our jobs, outsource our security)
Robin, the best way to get even with a bank is to take your business to a Credit Union. The more people that do this, the more power you take away from that bank and give to yourself, and the faster that bank goes under. So why waist your money in lawyer fees?
The dirty little secret of banking these days is that credit unions and community savings and loans are doing spectacularly well. The big players are keeping them from getting the assets to lend, but they are still stealing customer after customer from the big boys.
If you're ticked off at CitiBank --- go to a credit union. You can find free checking, better interest rates on CDs and savings, and usually you can use any ATM in the world for free or for a very small fee. They don't specialize in the little hidden fees because they don't individually have enough customers who would be hit to bother with.'
Citi's biggest scam is in the mortgage department. If a person gets behind on their mortgage, they send the file to the foreclosure department--where it sits, accumulating servicing fees. These servicing fees are added to the principal balance. They don't want to go ahead with foreclosure proceedings, even if a person is willing to surrender deed. Why? Taxpayers are paying those fees through loan guarantees by FHA, VA, Freddie and Fannie, (supported by our tax dollars), etc..
I'm just thrilled to know that our tax dollars bailed them out and now--they're sticking to the tax payer again---f**krs!
Does that mean it will cut off the hands of its employees if they are caught stealing money? I hope so, and look forward to the bank whose employees all have one hand.
This shows that they have absolutely no respect for their customers. If you have an account with CitiGroup, I highly suggest you find someone else to bank with, because if this shows anything, they don't give a rat's ass about you or your security.
So why charge everything? Isn't this part of what has put us into this mess? Isn't it about time we wake up to that fact? Why not wait until you have the money to buy it? Or is patience something we can do without?
Only in America, the reason is that sometimes an emergency happens and you do not have the cash on hand or in your savings account. What if your car breaks down? Do you have the money to pay for an expensive repair? I understand that you may be talking about buying the fancier stereo system or a new game system, but there are times that you need a charge card. Some places are loathe to accept personal checks.
Also, when my daughter was small, she did not like to go grocery shopping with me and I could not always get someone to watch her. She would try to stand up in the front part of the shopping cart. It was easier to just whip out the credit card than to try and count out the money for the groceries.
When I buy a car, I make sure I can afford to take care of it, and fix it when needed. So why would that be a hard thing to do? Why buy things you can`t afford to fix if they do break down? It`s not a hard concept to put into practice.
By the way Mercury, the only card I have and use, is my credit union debit card. I don`t get any charges for using it, it is accepted everywhere, and the money comes directly from my checking account to cover it. No cash in my checking account, there is no using it.
There needs to be a complete reorganization of the Internet if we are to ever bring the level of risk on the Internet under control. The truly sad part is they should have seen all of this coming a long time ago. National economies increasingly rely upon the safety of the Internet. Just one more way that government has failed us big time. - RC
You don't have to change the internet, just the laws. If for example, somebody steals my info, even if I gave it to you, from your data base, I am entitled to sue you for an unlimited amount of money. Matters not if you are citi, or 4chan, or whoever. Corporations stole our privacy. Let's start treating this like any other strong arm robbery.
So who fell asleep at the wheel? If its the gov't., then why is there all this clamor against gov't. regulation? and why the call for small government? Let's elect representatives that work for US and not their corporate money machine backers. I'm for a SMART government not one run by the smoothest talker, they're usually nothing more than greedy snake-oil salesmen. Also bla,e the accountants who can't figure out how to montize security risks, so there is no security.
So, everyone laughed off Sony's intrusion, because hey, it's only Sony and they totally deserved it, right? Then, a major weapons contractor, then a major financial institution, then...the CIA's public website.
Yep, all just fun and games. Completely harmless intrusions, with no real-life repercussions.
No matter what bank you use hackers are gonna find ever more ways to break in. No bank can forsee what a hacker may come up with next. What matters is how quickly the customers are notified so they can watch thier accounts for unauthorized activity and take diligent steps to either get issued new cards with new numbers or notify bank that there is a problem. Citi, Chase, Capitol One, Bank of America, and all other banks have probably been hacked at one time or another. Don't use DEBIT CARDS for online purchases is one of the most crucial steps the customer can take in order to protect themselves from unauthorized charges. - With the love of cyber payments, cyber purchases etc. there are going to be risks, but I bet despite all this there aren't too many willing to give up this convenience and go back to snail mail for everything.
My opinion is that the firewalls suck, because these cheap co-ksucker banks insist on hiring kids fresh out of college for security, instead of paying professional network security guys for their services. Here's a clue: not all protocols are visible to the internet. Find some grown ups to set up security for you.
@ Robin Steele: The problem is, most kids know more than their adult counterparts about computers. That's been the case for years and years. Firewalls are actually a great barrier....IF the backdoors are kept secure. If not, you may as well remove it altogether.
Regulators in many countries have also been preparing new measures on data security, with the head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp in the United States saying last week she may "ask some banks to strengthen their authentication when a customer logs onto online accounts."
"Banks are expected to continue to review their security measures in place to enhance the controls, where appropriate, on an ongoing basis," said an HKMA spokeswoman.
And there's the problem, the people who are in charge of regulating these kind of matters either have no interest in solving the problem or they don't have the power to enact the needed security measures. The various banks & large corporations who retain large quantities of personal & financial data aren't going to spend money to increase security if they don't have to b/c there's no penalty for security breaches when it comes to sensitive customer data.
If any company is going to store customer information, there needs to be significant financial penalties in place in order to create an incentive to protect the data. Otherwise, it's just going to be business as usual where these companies continue forward with a 'not my problem' approach to handling security breaches.
Excuse me, the problem is that the financial committees are made up of bankers so the banks are essentially self-regulating, or if you prefer, entirely unregulated. How do you think we got here in the first place?
It really just show how stupid they are, the problem isn't logging on to your account but rather they are logging on to that corporation's network then getting to the data. Logging on to your on-line account means you are in an application and somewhat controlled as to what you can do but get into a network and ALL that corporations data is literally at your finger tips. Hire some real network security staff or pay the price.
...Way to go Citi Group...I see that 45 Billion dollar bailout has already paid dividends to the U.S. citizens ...Oh wait ..I forget to say thanks for that .0005% interest I get on my savings account ...I hope you guys choke on every politicians cock you suck!
The banking industry needs to seriously look at building out a whole new infrastructure and not rely on old technology. This is too important of an issue for them to continue on the current path. Cards need revamped so they dont' used magnetics and won't get skimmed. Communications paths need refined and restricted so criminals cannot enter so easy. Enryption needs to be used from end to end. Emails need some sort of verification to show they are from an authentic user, that can be easily understood by the general population and not countered.
I have already partially burnt my Citi cards and sent them back. I suggest others do the same. It will teach the banking industry that John Q. Public doesn't take security lightly.
They're not the only ones! 2 months ago I went to pay for something and my Bank of America card got declined. It was so embarrasing but what made it even worse was that I knew there was no possible reason as to why it was declined. I called Bank of America && then is when I learned that their system was hacked (a month before my call) and my account was compromised. Mind you, I never received a notice or a new card. I had to be declined in order to find out that b.s!
Bank of America is just as bad, probably worse! About 2 months ago I was shopping and got declined, it was so embarrasing! What made it worse, was that I knew there was no possible way that I could be declined so I called Bank of America. When I called is when I learned that my account had been compromised (A MONTH EARLIER) I hadnt't received a notice or a new card, they just waited for me to use my card to let me know this b.s. Needless to say I cancelled the card then and there, no need to issue me a new one :)
The banks could do alot more when it comes to security. The European banks have begun switching over to a "smart chip" that's embedded into the credit card that makes the easily compromised black strip found on the majority of credit cards obsolete. However, the US banks are balking because of the ccsts associated with this newer technology. Banks have simply been passing on the costs of fraud to the consumer for years in the form of higher interest rates, therefore, what incentive is there for them to change. It will again take an act of Congress to get the banks to care about their consumer. I won't hold my breath!
Pretty unhappy with Citi. They say they made notice but my notice was a letter with a new card received this week. I called to complain about late notice and concerns about security. Asked why they were not taking action to protect me and it was then that they offered a Fraud Alert coverage for six months. Not in the letter or up front but only when I got serious about my concern. That the number of hacked accounts nearly doubled and they didnt know that only adds to the concern. Not sure why I believe any of it and am trying to find a way to cancel this account without impact on my credit score which can happen when you close accounts. I am done with Citi
Credit Unions? I left them a LONG time ago. I never felt like an OWNER. They are the same as banks as far as I am concerned. They don't even pay better or have better interest rates on loans. Our mortgage was SHOPPED OUT and not financed by them. Fees up the butt too. The best bank I have dealt with so far is ING.
Hmm, well I have a credit union "credit card" that draws directly from my checking account. There is no charge for overdrafts. I get cash back on debit purchases and interest-bearing checking.
citi does just fine by it's customers, when we got hit we had a new account before we even had a clue we'd been hacked and I check my statement every few days. The charges were reversed after they called us and asked about it. Have no problem with the way citi handles our accounts, they've been very very cooperative.
What can you expect from a financial institution that forced me to close my 9% credit card account then makes me pay off the balance at 16%. A blessing in disguise, aside from the ding on credit reports, and the (near) doubling of the interest rate. I will never have anything to do with this organization again. Don't think it can't happen to you.
They ARE still lying! Is it coincidence that my citibank card was swiped for a purchase in PA when I was in NM? Yes, the card was swiped at the merchant according to what citibank themselves told me. How could the magnetic strip be duplicated, along with the correct card number, expiration date and security code if no critical data was compromised.
Yes, they sent me a new card and I then had to notify all of the automatic payments I have set up from the card....I think I had 14 of them and it was no small feat!
And, my computer was hacked and it is sending emails to some in my address book. My next stop today is to take it in and PAY to have it debugged.
Oh yeah, I cancelled my card and urge everyone to do the same. THAT might get their attention.
Don't bother taking your PC in, your e-mail pswd has been compromised. Change your pswd, and "SIGN-OUT" of your e-mail when you are not using it. This is turning into a fairly common problem, you opened a link that itself didn't look like a problem but it sniffed your pswd. Check the headers on your sent mail and you will see the stuff is coming from all over the world. I also would not advise storing your e-mail pswd on your smartphone, it really has no protection at all.
And the penalty for their egregious failure to notify their customers is: nothing.
My penalty for a $5 over draft: $30, or 600% of the value.
NEVER put your trust in CITI. They put corporate greed above anything else.
What corporation doesn't put corporate greed over anything else? It's the capitalistic way!
Monkey@Keyboard - which bank do you recommend?
An even worse job? Thus, the 'penalty' is AN EVEN BIGGER BONUS!
Don't worry if they don't make money, the US government will take your money and give it to Citigroup for those bonuses for a bad job. It is 'necessary!' Just ask all your Republicans and Democrats!

Actually, voting with you wallet is the only thing they listen to. Go find a Credit Union, not another bank!
The banks rank lower than Congress in their credibility.
@charleyfarley No bank. Go Credit Union. I left Citi bank long long ago.. thank god.
Manipulating URL strings is not hacking, and is considered stupid-rule number one to guard against by web developers, hence, I hope they get sued for incompetence. (Outsource our jobs, outsource our security)
Ghost, I agree 100%, on the Credit Unions. The people own them, unlike other banks.
Robin, the best way to get even with a bank is to take your business to a Credit Union. The more people that do this, the more power you take away from that bank and give to yourself, and the faster that bank goes under. So why waist your money in lawyer fees?

Remember Citibank is 35% owned by Saudi Arabia.
Yes, but find a CREDIT UNION!
Easier said than done.
If you open up a charge account with Home Depot, Sears and others your card is owned and serviced by citi.
So why charge everything? Isn't this part of what has put us into this mess? Isn't it about time we wake up to that fact? Why not wait until you have the money to buy it? Or is patience something we can do without?

Wait, what? A big institution lied to the American people?
Obviously, this is just more hate-fueled loony leftist liberal marxist socialist pinko commie lamestream media spin.
Give me one good reason why I should trust ANYTHING a bank tells me!
Or for that reason anything any business tells me, they all seem to lie and cheat their customers without any remorse, except when they get caught.
Hmmm, sounds like an uncurable disease that infects politicans too.
Yeh, well; I assumed we all know the old maxim:...If their lips are moving, they're lying.
There needs to be a complete reorganization of the Internet if we are to ever bring the level of risk on the Internet under control. Well... All we have is Citibanks word that this even happened.
Their credibility demands that they prove their charges. Notice none of the hundreds of thousands of recently hacked credit cards ever get used?
I smell tax deductions for IT updating...and should anything have actually happened, it's merely dishonor among thieves.
I have already partially burnt my Citi cards and sent them back. I suggest others do the same. It will teach the banking industry that John Q. Public doesn't take security lightly.

Outside hackers are bad enough but if they be may be getting help from the inside then there's a real problem. $ can be very persuasive.

Per-incident charge for going above your credit limit: $30
Paying your credit card bill 1 day late: $35
The cost to taxpayers for bailing out CitiBank: $300 Billion
The feeling of cancelling you Citi (or any major bank) MasterCard: priceless

Don't close it, just stop using it. Then put an alert on it so that any charge over $0.01 sends you a notice.
thanks for the suggestion just added the alert good idea
wonder what the job opportunities are for hackers, is it a growth industry?
Citigroup is the worst of the worst when it comes to large financial institutions. Avoid them like the plague.

100% fix for credit card theft
every 6 months simply call in and get a new credit card number
IT is free! Same for debit cards!
Once a company actually shipped me some wine to an old address using
2+ year old credit card number
otherwise your data will sit there for years available to crooks.
For example amazon probably has 1000000 credit card numbers in it files just sitting there waiting for blackmail or other illegal coercion.
Call the right crook and Amazon is yours. Forget PayPal!
They ARE still lying! Is it coincidence that my citibank card was swiped for a purchase in PA when I was in NM? Yes, the card was swiped at the merchant according to what citibank themselves told me.
