If all of you would grow up and stop saying phrases that imply stupidity, this country would be better off. I don't like this crap government because they don't care about america and that includes dems and repubs and all the rest of them. America is going down and washington doesn't care.

I am going say this first and then get to my point - I am about to bash the government because I feel they are corrupt, weaselly little scumbags including Obama. Am I a racist? No. Am I a birther? At first but that's really old now and he's in office til the end of his term so continuing to say it is a waste of time (obviously). Do I support the Tea Party? Yes and no. I believe some of their ideas are good, while others are just too crazy for my taste.

Alright, now to my point about the conspiracy theories. Truthfully, I can't say whether I believe the government is speaking the truth about Osama bin Laden or not. I wish I could believe them, but more than anything I am sickened by the thought of not being able to trust my own government. Oh, and if Osama is actually dead (which I sure hope so) the credit goes to the men and women who did the job! Not the pencil pushing prissies in DC. I support my TROOPS who have DIED for this country!

Who said it was crazy to release the photos? I have no problem having those released and they should be, BUT the main argument is trooping a dead body around the streets like it is a huge prize. Aren't you being a little melodramatic about him being the most wanted man in American history? Considering that he never left one small area of the world, you would think if he was the MOST wanted EVER, we would have caught him before 9 years passed... wouldn't you? I mean... we can see people from orbit. Wouldn't we be scanning the ground looking for him. With all the tech that we have, I'm sure that he would have been spotted before now. He was a good excuse to invade a region, but most wanted? Come on... being the Ace of Spades on a deck of cards doesn't mean we are putting all our resources to finding him. Plus, I think all of the presidential assassins that escaped the scene of the crime would argue with you... especially John Wilkes Boothe.

For all the people who claim that desecrating Osama Bin Laden's body would have deterred terrorists, consider how often the same tactic was applied to Christian saints by the Romans when they were trying to stomp out the religion. They felt that such brutal displays would either scare off new converts or drive the Christian cult so far underground that any kind of expansion would be impossible. Instead, the dead were honored as martyrs. Their names and stories became examples for others to live by. And the brutality of their deaths only strengthened people's resolve.

Consider that many of these terrorists view America as a godless force determined to wipe out all the beliefs they hold dear. They feel no compunction about attacking us because in their eyes we are something sub-human, a nation of individuals who have sold their souls for material things. No doubt they expected us to parade Bin Laden's body through the street. The expected us to mutilate it and take souveneirs. The fact that we treated the body with respect shows that we are not the monsters they have come to believe we are. Burying the body at sea was also a smart move. Had the body been left anywhere it might have been accessible the tomb would have either been defiled or become a shrine within the week. Probably both.

I'm not idealistic enough to think that the gesture is going to convince everyone to lay down their arms and admit they were wrong. But it might make one or two think about it. And it may make it harder to find new recruits. The exact results of this action will never be known, but the potential for a good outcome is much greater than if we'd paraded him through the streets.

Besides, the very idea of putting the body on display is simply repulsive. It's the act of a petty dictator wishing to rule through fear and intimidation throwing a temper tantrum. The rejection of such ideas is one of the key principles this country was founded on. I know that it may have been viscerally satisfying for a lot of people, but accepting and feeding those kinds of impulses is what created men like Bin Laden in the first place. The kind of barbarism that some have suggested here is quite simply beneath us. We have never collected the heads of our foes to decorate the walls, and we never should.

You know, Jaime, I find it interesting, and this applies to both sides of the aisle, but since you said it, you will become my example. When Obama came into office, he said that we would get, bin Laden... we have. It happened on his watch. He had to give the okay to do a mission in a "friendly" country. He was involved in this more than you want to acknowledge, simply because he has done what Bush couldn't, or more than likely, wouldn't do. Instead, you want to take away one of his campaign promises by saying that he had nothing to do with it. BUT... if Bush had nailed him during his watch, it would have been Bush's accomplishment because he led. Just like it was Bush's accomplishment that we captured Saddam. Remember, it is those pencil pushers that got the intel on location, troop strength, compound layout, etc. Otherwise, the Seal team would not have been able to practice the take down for a month and come out of the mission unscathed! You send in your boys blind... they get dead. You give them good intell and support... they make the enemy dead.

Kinko - Very true and I cannot disagree with your statement. As I stated before though, I have a very difficult time trusting my government at this moment because I feel both the right and left are insane. I am not saying I am believing these conspiracies (I hate those) but I feel the men and women who did the job need more praise than those in DC coordinating this. Don't get me wrong, everyone involved deserves praise, it's just that I feel the soldiers deserve more than those in DC. It's hard to explain, but I am tired of the government taking credit for everything when our brothers and sisters are laying their lives down for this country.

Here's an example as to why I think the soldiers deserve more credit over those in DC. My cousin was in Afghanistan a few weeks ago believing he wouldn't be getting paid for his service, yet he never had any thoughts of leaving the army because he knew he needed to protect his country. He was afraid he wasn't going to be able to send money home to his daughter because of the possible shutdown that was going on because of the government, but still he stayed because it was his duty. (Okay back to the main conversation, I don't want a shutdown debate here too! lol)

Like I said, I don't disagree with your statement, but some people deserve more credit than others, especially when it was their lives they were gambling with to bring Osama bin Laden down.

The majority of muslim are indifferent to positive towards us... the exception being the countries where we are/ have destroyed residential buildings during our wars. We are fighting a guerrilla war in Iraq, so we treat all of the Iraqis the same. How would you feel if you were treated like a criminal by the people that you are grateful for freeing them from a dictator? Could you take getting roughed up a little with guns pointed at you while they ripped up your car every day looking for an explosive? Those on the front line are sacraficing alot to protect this country, and I thank them along with you. Those men and women who go into battle knowing they may not come out deserve our respect and to know that their families will be takin care of.

The arguement about who deserves the "Credit" on this forum is more about how well a certain person shows leadership and the ability to command our armed forces. I think alot of people were unsure of how Obama would fare in matters such as this and he showed that he is very capable in my mind. This is the "Credit" im giving him. That he did not move from his position that we needed to go into afgahn with more support if we wanted to bring OBL to justice. Even in the face of American protests that called for the return of our troops.

If we didnt put more effort into Afgahnastan, do you think we would have gotten to OBL? Truth is I dont think we would have. So hypothetically speaking, say if another man was President and he pulled out of the ME like many want, OBL could very well still be alive and planning more attacks. Point is we dont know what would have happened if Obama didnt put the effort he did to stay the course.

Conspiracy theories will always be out there when the information is incomplete, chaotic, confusing or contradictory. As to trusting the government? Up to a point. Anyone who thinks the individuals working in and for the government are altruistic saints is beyond foolish. They are human beings complete with all the foibles and inconsistencies inherent in the species. That includes the seven deadly sins and a few other not so deadly sins. Greed, avarice, mendacity, power mongering, cupidity and downright stupid are all part and parcel of the character of the individuals in power. Both past and present.

Jamie, I try not to get uncivil (some times people get me)... there is no need to. It is simply that one person makes a point and you make your point. You may know something that they don't. You may see it another way, and giving them that point of view might alter theirs a little bit. Exchanging ideas can only bring us together. Screaming and tearing at each other is what is ripping the fabric of this beautiful country apart. When I was young, I was taught that America was a melting pot of cultures, religions and ideas. The sad thing is that I had to grow up and look into the pot and see that everything is old, stale and separated. What we need is for someone to give it a stir. Problem is that the chunks inside don't want to get stirred. Do I blame this on our government? Partially. The way it is polarized has done nothing but help with the separation. President Obama gave as an excuse for his dumping the body so quickly and by a method which cannot be reversed that Muslim religion requires burial within 24 hours and that there would be no Muslim country which would accept the body. MALE BOVINE FECAL MATTER! First, I believe that several, maybe all Muslim countries would have given permission for such burial if asked. But considerng the speed at which the POTUS moved, I doubt he asked many or even any of them. Second, I doubt there is any country in the world which does not have at least one Muslim buried. Third, there is one country which, although not a Muslim country does have millions of Muslims among its citizens, many of whom are buried in that country when they die. Further that particular country would hardly be likely to turn down a request from President Obama for burial. That country is The United States of America. His unilateral action in bridge burning shows---once again---(Gatesgate, anyone?) his arrogance or impulsiveness or poor judgment or all of the above.

Nobody gives a rats ass what they do with the body eventually. All we should be concerned with is what they did with it right now. Kinko, Jamie, et al......The argument of who deserves most credit is getting beaten to death. I think we forget that in a team environment there are different levels of responsibility, different roles, and types of risk. In this case those risks include political (strategic world-wide and domestic), and personal (depending on role). The driving force in a mission needs to be the objective. All team members must focus on the objective and fulfill their role to minimize risk.

I believe we need to be able to acknlowledge that all contributing roles led to the success of the mission to get bin Laden. Those roles include taxpayers, elected, appointed, or hired decision makers, mission planners, aircrews, and those wearing the boots on the ground. Each role is filled by the person whose is supposedly the best qualified to fill it.

I am pleased that our system of government is robust enough to suffer the transition of elected roles, and I am immeasurably pleased that it is supported by the honor and dedication to our way of government that incites the people in those boots to make the sacrfices they do.

If we limit our personal contribution (role) to the success of our government to uneducated and uninformed posting to these discussions, we are not helping our own cause. If we pay taxes we should at least be an informed voter. That is the method our country has chosen for managing our government. And, above all, we need to place principles ahead of personalities.

So... the taxpayers contributed to the mission? Did you go snap a few pix of the compound, Tim? Oh, I know... the taxpayers paid for it with their taxes, but do you really need a pat on the butt for being a wallet? Do you accept blame when something goes wrong, or does that stay away from you? Not a team effort when things go wrong, is it?

Elected officials that are qualified... now that is funny. Have you ever seen a full session of Congress on CSPAN? How often have you seen about 15 guys sitting around with a congressman just talking to hear himself talk. These are the qualified officials that you speak of? How exactly did they have anything to do with this mission? I'll tell you... they didin't. They had no clue that it was happening, otherwise they would have grandstanded to make themselves look good for the up coming election. Politicians can't be trusted when it comes to military operations... Vietnam is the perfect example of that.

I would love to know what country that you are living in that works together so well... that never argues... that thinks as one, because you aren't in the US. As much as I would LOVE to see things work that way, the reality of the situation is that there are so many sides that each side wants the credit and to deny the others any at all. The liberals choose to pull the race card when a conservative disagrees with Obama on a policy issue. The immediate reaction to a conservative doing thus is the conservative is "racist."

All right, I'm usually not one for conspiracy theories, but on this one, I am too close to it not to say anything at all.

In 2003 (may have been early 2004) my husband and half of his unit were in Kuwait. They were told by the brass Bin Laden was killed back then, but the mission would continue as usual. No one ever told these troops that it was a mistake. Meanwhile there have been no credible releases of video or audio of Bin Laden since then, so he has been operating all these years under the assumption that the man was truly dead and for whatever reason our government needed the idea that he was alive to continue. He was always concerned about how, when the "boogeyman" was considered officially dead by the government, things would play out in telling the truth to the people. He is very bothered by the fact that the body was dumped, because it would be easier for him to believe that his memory is of a mistake that was never clarified if there were a body of proof.

Elayne, it sounds like you're mad at corporations, not the government. And while I can see how that can be confusing for you, you should really read more about big oil and peak oil before starting down that path.

Burial within 24 hours is a widely practiced Muslim custom. Based on the accounts provided, the burial was conducted in accordance Muslim practice, which shows respect for the religion and culture.

At the same time, it was an ignominious burial in comparison to burial on land under the circumstances, and implies that bin Laden was so evil that no one wanted his corpse.

Thus, without fanning the flames of cultural and religious hatred, bin Laden has been disrespected far more effectively, and in a way no one can resonably complain about, than could have possibly been accomplished by desecrating his corpse.

The U.S. can now more quickly move on to other issues.

Erika, you have written the most intelligent, & sensitive post that I have read so far. My husband & I too were appalled by the sights of people partying in the streets because a man died. We feel that his death was just, but feel sorrow for all those that died at 9/11, & indeed feel sad over anyone's death.

If possible it was too bad that they could not capture him alive, & possibly gotten a lot of new information & leads to other terrorists. If they had captured him alive, then I think the story of his burial at sea would be a very handy way of thwarting any uprisings staged to induce his release.

The President of the United States is not a post affiliated with any religious viewpoint. In fact the constitution spells out fairly clearly that when it comes down to it the President is expected to be an American first, and a Christian/Lutheran/Jew/Muslim/Scientologist second. The President is responsible to do the right thing for the country and their people, not their god, and not their soul. Because when it comes down to it the responsibilities of the President is in fundamental conflict with the teachings of the Bible. Even something as simple as "thou shalt not kill" is impossible to follow. Even when we're not in war time, the fact is that the government authorizes the killing of criminals in death penalty states. Every execution comes with a seal of approval from the government.

If you really are so concerned with a candidate's religious convictions, then frankly the only sensible thing would be to only vote for atheist or agnostic candidates. Except that there really aren't any of those, because for too many people in this country "atheist" is equivalent to "amoral." It's a narrowminded ignorant viewpoint, but that doesn't make it any less of a reality we have to live with. A single politician martyring their career by proclaiming their lack of faith isn't going to change that.

If it really bothers you that much, then the only thing you can really do is address the core problem of this belief that for one to be a good leader one must also have faith in god. And that is a long, thankless task which will see ten people spit in your face for every one that is willing to listen.

While I agree with much of your post, I do have to say that it's hard for me to see how we are going to rebuild our national sense of unity given the current atmosphere. Ever since Reagan there has been a growing sentiment in the country that there is only one right way to do things, that this is a simple even obvious conclusion, and that anyone who differs from this viewpoint is trying to fool people.

I'll go ahead and say right now that I'm a democrat, a liberal, a tree-hugger, or whatever other semiperjorative name people would like to fling in my direction. Given that however, there are a lot of things about the liberal approach to government that is just plain silly. This idea that we should be cutting down on our defense budget, for example. Military spending is vital not only for our own defense, but also for the massive number of jobs it provides in our economy. Much of our existing technology is old and becoming more expensive than it's worth to keep running. Cutting defense spending may save us some money in the short term, but in the long term is likely to do more harm than good. Especially if we suddenly find ourselves in a real war again, in which case the complexity of our modern hardware would make it almost impossible to simply jump into a war footing within a few months as we did in the early days of WWII. Likewise, there does come a point where economic regulation can become excessive and harmful to businesses, particularly small start-ups and local shop owners. And a democratic politician who tries to say otherwise in order to win votes wins very few points in my book, and should probably not be put in a position of power.

That said, the Republican party as of late has become far too extreme in its viewpoints for me to ever consider voting for someone endorsed by them. People like Sarah Palin who think that charming witticisms and twitter entries are an acceptable substitute for actual knowledge or critical thought, that "common sense" is all someone really needs to run a country, and that it's acceptable to remain ignorant of the complex realities of the world are perhaps the most dangerous candidates imagineable in my book. The United States is too big and complex a force to be controlled by someone like this, someone who seems to have no respect for the responsibility or the difficulty of assuming such a role. The fact that they are willing to put members of the radical fringe who are more interested in things being done their way than things just being done terrifies me, and surrendering to that belief is to surrender to a tyrant with no face and no easy identity to root out. With the ready acceptance of the tea party and the birther movement, I feel that I simply cannot trust the bulk of the Republican politicians to act in the country's interests if those interest conflict with the greater advancement of the Republican party.

Understand that I desperately want to. I want to believe that most if not all of the people leading our country are reasonable people who seek to serve the country as a whole as opposed to just the ones who vote for them. But until the Republicans show that they're willing to compromise, willing to embrace viewpoints that differ from theirs, willing to denounce extremist demagogues like Anne Coulter and Sarah Palin, or even just willing to admit that maybe they DON'T know how to fix everything, I don't see any way I can. Handing over our country to people like that who make snap decisions born of dogma and raw emotion and wear it like a badge of honor would be as much as admitting that I've stopped caring about the country. What's worse is that I know that many of the people on the Republican side of the fence feel exactly the same way about me. I don't think they're right, but honestly I can never really be entirely sure of that.

As much as I hate to say it, the divisionists have won. And we let them do it. The only way I can see to heal that damage is for a whole bunch of people on both sides to let go of the security that comes from feeling one knows everything and admit that in the end, none of us really know enough to make sense of how the world works and start judging our leaders based on their qualifications and achievements instead of what color tie they wear on election night.

But I think we are entitled to know what happened. When it happened. The reports are they proved through DNA that it was bin laden who was killed and they dumped his body. He was dumped within 24 hours in accordance with religious beliefs. Personally, I don't think we should have bowed to their beliefs/traditions. I had heard it takes days, weeks to get the DNA proof, but they were able to do the tests in a matter of a few hours.

Those who don't want to see pictures, don't have to look at them. The government doesn't always know what is best for us.

The reason it usually takes so long to do a DNA test is that the labs who do it are generally working through a very long backlog. It depends on what kind of test you need to perform, but some can actually be done in just a few minutes. The most accurate fast ones tend to take an hour or so though. Either way, there was more than enough time to perform the test.

As far as releasing footage and pictures, consider that this was a mission carried out by one of our most skilled black ops teams. From what I've read it's policy to never divulge the identities of the soldiers on the squad, even when they're killed in action. I understand he wasnt shot point blank with double 00 buckshot but it was likely an assault rifle with lots of punch. In another thread below a guy mentions that if it was a full metal jacket - the penetration would be fairly clean. We dont know that or what they used.

John Scaggs...My late father-in-law served in WWII as did several of my maternal uncles. I worked with a scientist who bore that horrible blue number on his arm from a Nazi concentration camp. I've seen WWII photos taken in Japan where my late uncle was deployed shortly before the bomb was dropped.

I've also seen the bodies of some of my schoolmates who returned in body bags from Viet Nam. Anyone who doubts WWII only has to visit any VFW to find the facts. Pictures mean nothing. You mention there's video, etc. of the Moon Landing. Right. And a few years ago one of the Major Networks (it's been long enough I can't remember which one) did an expose on certain.. idiosyncrasies just as not starscape, wind blowing the flag, and that the craters match up identically to some found in Nevada.

Honestly there's more Proof that Paul McCartney is dead than there is with Bin Lauden, but still.... Photo evidence, things of this nature, mean little. It's not proof. It can be staged. So either way, you have to take it on a bit of faith.

Stop bashing Arizona. I'm a college graduate of 53, have worked for 32 years, go to church,own a gun and have never physically harmed anyone. A much loved friend and congregation member of mine was killed in January at the Safeway shootings. I have 3 ferrets and 2 cats, all well cared for. Oh yes, and 2 daughters, one in college and one in The Armed Forces. Just quit with the insulting attitude that all we Arizonans are bigoted, ignorant know and do nothings!

There are a number of high level politicians who have refused to release their college transcripts. Hillary Clinton in particular. Having said that, it is a fact that Barack was the first black President of the Harvard Law Review. Doubting that he got that position as a "poor student" as the Donald has suggested. Some of you people are unreal.

I'm inclined to believe that they got him. Then again I believe that we probably aren't the only intelligent life forms in the whole of the universe, too.

However, it doesn't help that so many conflicting or inaccurate accounts of the details by various news sources are busily circulating. Most reports state that two helicopters were involved - others say four helicopters. All concur that one was left behind/destroyed and that 30-40 Navy SEALS took part in the raid. So how did they load the additional 15-20 soldiers plus the body into the one remaining helicopter? Is this possible - was it not overloaded? Still another article mentioned that women and children from the compound were taken into custody! Were they also crammed into only one helicopter or were they released before the SEAL team departed? Oh now the late news just reported that "the wounded wife was left behind"! And that she had been used as a shield? Guess they took her down - before they finished off Osama bin Laden. Wonder if she survived? Pakistan seems to be pretty mum on what they know.

Which leads one to the more troubling question - as to what did Pakistan know in the first place? It's honestly harder to believe that bin Laden was NOT surrounded by bodyguards! !One courier and his brother - and an adult son? If MONEY wasn't buying bin Laden's safety - there's a bridge for sale in Brooklyn.

And about all those satelites circling in space. If they've known about this "suspicious" compound since last August - what was the great debate about? Maybe the capabilities of our orbital intelligence gathering system isn't as crystal clear as touted.

Lastly, it was announced that the confirmation came Sunday morning - yet the President decided to play 9 holes of golf anyway - while leaving the rest of his team to what - reaffirm the info? So what's up with that? Then he FINALLY makes the big speech at almost midnight. Were they NOT planning to divulge the news Sunday in the first place - but then the guy on twitter inadvertently leaked the raid?!

Lots of unanswered questions. While I don't feel the need to see the video or photos - I'd still be interested to know MORE about the exact details. They need to release the "Official White House" report with as much factual info as possible - the sooner the better. Although it won't derail the hardcore skeptics.

Unfortunately - I don't believe the world is actually a safer place because of the death of Osama bin Laden. There will always be another evil twisted madman to take his place. When the Berlin Wall fell - everyone celebrated in the streets, too. But the end of the Cold War was quickly turned into the long nightmare of Yugoslavia. We've never won the war on poverty. We've never won the war on drugs. It's also fairly doubtful that we'll ever win the war on terrorism.

At least for the victims and families of 911 - justice has been served.

Historybuff...The world can only be as safe as you make it to be. The most fundamental element of life is good vs. evil. It will always be so. Sometimes, the scales tip too far one way and then the high-minded among us take action.

Be assured that the Middle East is changing more rapidly than it ever expected to. I credit this to our military who had the most far-reaching effects on every Middle Eastern civilian they came in contact with.

Our brave military risked their lives and their most indelible asset is their ability to make marked changes everywhere they go. There is nothing as radical for change as sending in our troops who take the time and trouble to help the civilians where they are sent to fight. This is what is changing the attitudes of young Middle Eastern men and women. They now want what they saw our military endowed with: freedom.

Joe Blow ...I so agree...You have to admit that one thing we can never take for granted is our extraordinary military. Once again, they got to the heart of a matter and I, for one, couldn't be prouder of them.

Okay this article gives a bit more clarification. It appears that the women and children had to be left behind due to the one helicopter's untimely demise. Still are we left to assume that they were ushereded into a "safe area" - and then - did the Navy team bar the doors & windows - and wait until after they safely swooped back across the border to "alert the Pakistani authorities to come & take custody"?

Hmm sound sleepers those Pakistanis - 40 minutes of gun fire!!

The most tantalizing new piece of info is that ONE LIVE MALE CAPTIVE was also whisked away with the SEALS?! (some speculation that it was another one of bin Laden's sons!) Wonder what the status of the mystery captive is and why the secrecy if this is true?

Again so many conflicting reports and unanswered questions in this day & age of instant communication and unparalleled technology. Yet there will remain more to this story than we will ever know.

Release the photos - let those who care to look - see for themselves. It's like a horrific accident scene - where the lookie loos always have to slow down to gawk and further back up traffic!! And in the end - it will still be like those who are convinced that there was more than one shooter on the grassy knoll. People believe what they choose to believe.

Oh my gosh! Why is this not surprising to me? McCain wants boots on the ground - not Obama. I'm guessing that will not happen. Why can't you people just be happy that a terrorist who is responsible for thousands of deaths is dead and that the United States is responsible for his death.
