Hey, I'm all for civil disobedience, in the frame of Ghandi, MLK, Mohommed Ali, and so on. But remember, these folks were open about their disobedience and willing to take the punishment for breaking the law. That is what makes it a powerful tool. But what Anonymous is doing is not civil disobedience, it is vigiliantism, taking the law into their own hands. They bear more resemblence to the folks running a lynching than MLK.

It's pretty naive to think our own Intel community doesn't reek havoc by hacking. The Iranians and their Nuke plans are testimony. The problem is--they don't stop there. If they classify someone subversive they terrorize also. "No Fly", sneak a peek, no knock warrants, they use these tools on an ongoing basis.
I don't want these folks to do what they intend to do--but our own government hid the fact that 66,000 innocents were killed in Iraq--all the while, saying they did not keep those statistics. One thing Anonymous has never done, they have never shot a person, they have never taken away someones freedom. Governments do that. If anything the only thing they do is expose who people or institutions are without the fluffy filter. People don't like that, we like our fake persona's that aren't us and what everyone 'thinks' we are in society. The bigger the company, institution, or individual the more that persona is important, and the more they dislike the idea of it being stripped away.
Take for example Bradley Manning, ultimately someone left a careless 20 something with the keys to a lot of stuff. Manning essentially aired some dirty laundry and crast emails. Very little was dangerous to anyone but government's persona. While Manning may go to jail does he deserve to be there for the rest of his life for airing snarky emails? Did he deserve to get the treatment that was reported in solitary for that? And what about the idiot who gave this kid clearance? As Americans, why don't we have his head on a pike?

This news story is completely misleading, if you are tech savy and under 30, you may or may not have ever heard of Anon before any of this started. By 1862 banks went back to reissuing their own money again. In 1863 the National Banking Act was enacted and money as we know now materialized ( here in the US ). The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System is made up of members of the banking industry. A commercial bank can obtain notes from the Federal Reserve whenever they wish. YOU can't. This is done by debiting it's reserve account, smaller banks get their money from the larger ones. See where you are on this totem pole? Nowhere to be seen. Why? you don't own a bank, just the bitching and whining about them. Which is and was my point all along. Get ten more people to agree that I am a serf and you have the mob mentality that I was talking about as well.

I understand what you're try to say Robin and I think we are talking about the same thing. Just going at it differently. Take this example: If the debacle we had in 2008 was done in 1791, and let's say Bank of America survived the bubble but Chase didn't... the ownership of Chase dollars would be fruitless because it would have been worthless. And that's "your" money ( based on what you had stated earlier ). All the National Banking Act did was nationalize the money so banks can have more of the same within their own competition. The custody of money is done by the Federal Reserve in conjunction with the US Treasury.
I am not disagreeing with the fact that wealth is created off the sweat of our backs, but the rules of the game ( believe it or not ) was being played fair and square ( minus lobbying ) as far as the 700 billion in TARP funds is concerned. In other words, if you allow an additional 700 billion of money that belongs to me in the first place, I have every right to keep it for myself, if there is no provision in place saying I have to share it. And nowhere in the constitution does it preface the use of money, which is why the governing body for it, is the banks themselves. While people would say therein lies the problem, I say: There lies the answer to our woes. We the people create wealth, and based on the rules of the time; if we garnered that energy to mandate ( as a business ) that same wealth instead of civil disobedience, or the cry thereof... the change we seek would be eminent, instead of the contrast and clashes we have in place now. You mentioned water, I say fight fire with fire.
All money represents is the value between the trade of services. And since we the people are not and will not resort back to primitive barter, we need to organize the institution ( not change the current ones ) of banking to the merits of ethics we as a people uphold. Asking big business or the banking industry to change from what it has conformed to is no different than asking a two year old to give the birthday gift they picked out, to the birthday kid at the party and they refused to do so, because they thought that wrapped gift belonged to them. But, by embarking on the same business as banks do ( as a conglomerate of the People themselves ) would bring about the change we complain of or are subject to. That's all I was trying to say.

It's about the control of the flow of information. Hence, you might someday have to pay a fee just to Google the answer of how to find the area of a circle. I don't think you understand the machanics behind the internet - the Internet by nature of design, is insecure. Like trying to develop an accident-proof car, the internet would have to be completely redesigned. The best you can do is buy insurance and be a safe user. And Comcast already has incentive to do this in order to compete with other media outlets that stream TV and Movie content.. Thus it would cost you more to stream video through Amazon On Demand than to have cable TV, or Possibly stream through Comcast itself. Thus you have a monopoly in progress. Or the consolidation of information control.

Nothing, but that's not really the MO of this group. There are far larger/better funded groups that are trying to steal your personal data (for financial gain) as we speak.
In the HB Gary case, Anonymous ended up with everyone's emails, but they only released the ones related to Wikileaks and HB Gary's own "investigation" into Anon. They gave assurances to the president of HB Gary that they wouldn't release the emails that would jeopardize HB Gary's legitimate client base, and so far, have kept their word.
As a thought though, you're putting your trust in these companies when you give them your data; whose fault is it really if it gets out?

Anonymous stands for free speech. It is therefore self-destructive for them to attack the church who are exercising their basic right (however perverse it may be). However, the ones who oversee Anonymous did later release information on how to attack the church...if someone was so inclined.

Funny how when its a group of citizens doing what they believe is right (and at most inconveniencing the targets), even though its technically illegal the government shares this mentality of throwing the book at them. Yet when government officials/agents break the law (Torture, Murder, Unlawful detainment, property theft, invasion of privacy) for far less moral reasons they get at most a slap on the wrist. I realize there are laws regarding computer hackers, etc. But is it breaking and entering? No one, is actually breaking into or entering, a building. And who really has a right to cyberspace? I mean once you put your garbage, at the curb is it illegal, for someone else to take it? We all take rays from the sun but do those rays belong to someone? What about air? Who has the right of way air? Should we be paying air tax? So many questions, so little time.

If someone hacks into your bank account and redeposits the money into their bank account leaving you with nothing, would you take that as a theft of your assets? If there are programs set up to prevent someone from accessing your computer and they go around those programs to access the information would you call that theft? Do you personally own the sun? Can someone own the sun? Actually, with cap and trade they can tax you for air, that's what's so ingenious about it.

One thing Anonymous has never done, they have never shot a person, they have never taken away someones freedom. Governments do that. If anything the only thing they do is expose who people or institutions are without the fluffy filter. People don't like that, we like our fake persona's that aren't us and what everyone 'thinks' we are in society. The bigger the company, institution, or individual the more that persona is important, and the more they dislike the idea of it being stripped away.
Take for example Bradley Manning, ultimately someone left a careless 20 something with the keys to a lot of stuff. Manning essentially aired some dirty laundry and crast emails. Very little was dangerous to anyone but government's persona. While Manning may go to jail does he deserve to be there for the rest of his life for airing snarky emails? Did he deserve to get the treatment that was reported in solitary for that? And what about the idiot who gave this kid clearance? As Americans, why don't we have his head on a pike?
Can Anonymous get a little rogue? Some elements yes. But you can never blame Anonymous as a whole, because, as they are fond of saying, we are all Anonymous.

About the worst thing that hackers could do on a large scale would be to mess with the diagnostics systems, which might confuse the workers but wouldn't actually effect operations.

This news story is completely misleading, if you are tech savy and under 30, you may or may not have ever heard of Anon before any of this started. They are being portrayed as some sort of comic book villian terrorist group. I guess msnbc is trying to dumb it down for the pickup truck crowd to get more webhits. All I see is a long article innaccurately describing some mythical DOS attack superweapon and other hacktivist activities. People volunteer to take place in these pranks, because they believe that what they are doing is right. By 1862 banks went back to reissuing their own money again. In 1863 the National Banking Act was enacted and money as we know now materialized ( here in the US ). The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System is made up of members of the banking industry. A commercial bank can obtain notes from the Federal Reserve whenever they wish. YOU can't. This is done by debiting it's reserve account, smaller banks get their money from the larger ones. See where you are on this totem pole? Nowhere to be seen. Why? you don't own a bank, just the bitching and whining about them. Which is and was my point all along. Get ten more people to agree that I am a serf and you have the mob mentality that I was talking about as well.

I understand what you're try to say Robin and I think we are talking about the same thing. Just going at it differently. Take this example: If the debacle we had in 2008 was done in 1791, and let's say Bank of America survived the bubble but Chase didn't... the ownership of Chase dollars would be fruitless because it would have been worthless. And that's "your" money ( based on what you had stated earlier ). All the National Banking Act did was nationalize the money so banks can have more of the same within their own competition. The custody of money is done by the Federal Reserve in conjunction with the US Treasury.
I am not disagreeing with the fact that wealth is created off the sweat of our backs, but the rules of the game ( believe it or not ) was being played fair and square ( minus lobbying ) as far as the 700 billion in TARP funds is concerned. In other words, if you allow an additional 700 billion of money that belongs to me in the first place, I have every right to keep it for myself, if there is no provision in place saying I have to share it. And nowhere in the constitution does it preface the use of money, which is why the governing body for it, is the banks themselves. While people would say therein lies the problem, I say: There lies the answer to our woes. We the people create wealth, and based on the rules of the time; if we garnered that energy to mandate ( as a business ) that same wealth instead of civil disobedience, or the cry thereof... the change we seek would be eminent, instead of the contrast and clashes we have in place now. All money represents is the value between the trade of services. And since we the people are not and will not resort back to primitive barter, we need to organize the institution ( not change the current ones ) of banking to the merits of ethics we as a people uphold. Ethics are unfortunately relative. And I don't advocate vengeful attacks. I personally advocate free flow of information, and Government integrity in terms of ethics. And it seems that you also have a problem with Ethics when you start calling people "Idiots".. And Net Neutrality is being attacked not because of Hackers ect.. It's about the control of the flow of information. Hence, you might someday have to pay a fee just to Google the answer of how to find the area of a circle. Or certain information will not be allowed to be processed or accessed to which could threaten government power, or corporate power. Careful, it always starts simple in order to get it to sell. And they will indeed exploit things like Wiki Leaks to achieve that already predetermined agenda.
Unfortunately civil disobedience is necessary if a civilization doesn't want to become sheep under dictatorships, or theocracies ect. If you think you can achieve government by for the people and by the people without crossing ethical boundaries, you have a lot to learn. And let's not forget that the American Indians got royally screwed in this deal, or drive to supposed freedom. So it's matter of how you want to play that game of ethics.

I don't think you understand the machanics behind the internet - the Internet by nature of design, is insecure. Like trying to develop an accident-proof car, the internet would have to be completely redesigned. The best you can do is buy insurance and be a safe user. You're not going to stop my abilities by shutting down freedoms, only your own.
Even if the internet was redesigned, it would fail in respect to security. For it to even operate or be functional their has to be an open door on either end. And that is exactly why most people don't understand that internet security is largely a logical fallacy when you are playing on this level. And so of course the Media, Corporations, and the Government are going to use it as a scare tactic to remove Net Neutrality. And there is potential big business out there in regards to controlling and selling of information. Especially educational information!.
A potential example :
Google how to get the area of a circle. 1 dollar please to have access to this information while you already pay a subscriber fee and access fee to the system. Hence, comcast could charge you to access certain kinds of information even if the site itself is free. States could excise information access taxes ect.
And Comcast already has incentive to do this in order to compete with other media outlets that stream TV and Movie content.. Thus it would cost you more to stream video through Amazon On Demand than to have cable TV, or Possibly stream through Comcast itself. Thus you have a monopoly in progress. Or the consolidation of information control.

I dont think so, these "kids" seem to be making a statement. They may one day wind up being our best friends...a comment was said earlier they should be employed because of their skills. Thing with Manning, he wasn't a simple whistle blower. He put everything out there, without any redaction on identities, to minimise harm to security assets. In the HB Gary case, Anonymous ended up with everyone's emails, but they only released the ones related to Wikileaks and HB Gary's own "investigation" into Anon. They gave assurances to the president of HB Gary that they wouldn't release the emails that would jeopardize HB Gary's legitimate client base, and so far, have kept their word.
As a thought though, you're putting your trust in these companies when you give them your data; whose fault is it really if it gets out?

This is just their latest "thing". The first I heard about them they were exposing the truth about the cult *cough* I mean Church of Scientology (which has NOTHING to do with real science). Then I heard about them trying to expose the Koch Brothers and their use of corporately funded mind manipulation techniques to fabricate grass roots movements as well as the use of corporate funds for buying out politicians.

The CEOs and others who caused the economic crash in 2008 are still running the show. Larry Sommers, Timothy Guentner, Ben Benanke, Alan Greenspan, (although currently retired) top CEOs who were sitting at Lehman, AIG, Chase, BofA, Behr Stearns, the derivatives people, the CDO people who after looting their companies, running off with millions in bonuses, stealing trillions of dollars from taxpayers in bailouts are still sitting in Washington, some on President Obama's cabinet and appointed to other programs in the current administration. THEY SHOULD ALL BE IN JAIL!!! As you can see by context, I was referring to a previous comment about Anonymous targeting the Westboro Baptist Church. A representative of Anonymous was quoted as saying they stand for free speech and therefore would not target the church.

I do believe you consider yourself terrorized if you started receiving death threats, had your social security number stolen, had your home address put out on the internet, had the names of your children put out on the internet. Funny how when its a group of citizens doing what they believe is right (and at most inconveniencing the targets), even though its technically illegal the government shares this mentality of throwing the book at them. Yet when government officials/agents break the law (Torture, Murder, Unlawful detainment, property theft, invasion of privacy) for far less moral reasons they get at most a slap on the wrist. I would call it hypocrisy but that seems to be understating the problem severely.
I would want to see some solid evidence that they did threatened anyone before foaming at the mouth about it...

I realize there are laws regarding computer hackers, etc. But is it breaking and entering? No one, is actually breaking into or entering, a building. And who really has a right to cyberspace? I mean once you put your garbage, at the curb is it illegal, for someone else to take it? We all take rays from the sun but do those rays belong to someone? What about air? Who has the right of way air? Should we be paying air tax? So many questions, so little time.
That they haven't physically entered a building in order to take what wasn't rightfully theirs is still stealing. If someone hacks into your bank account and redeposits the money into their bank account leaving you with nothing, would you take that as a theft of your assets? If there are programs set up to prevent someone from accessing your computer and they go around those programs to access the information would you call that theft? Do you personally own the sun? Can someone own the sun? Actually, with cap and trade they can tax you for air, that's what's so ingenious about it.

since you are accessing the "door" to their accounts like any other person who uses Identify Theft.
It's just as well that banks use a sophisticated way of identifying their users online (more so when using the phone to get online help). This insures that the person has their assets in a secure "vault".
In that sense YES it is indeed a B & E when someone decides to still your money regardless of whether it is at the bank or online bank. As well as the right to privacy about personal matters especially things like family when it involves children who AREN'T EVEN PART OF IT TO BEGIN WITH putting their safety at risk too. What law states that it is not stealing when a bank account is emptied and the contents of said account are moved to where the account holder
A. doesn't know where the money is
B. Is unable to access said account and didn't authorize the removal

Real productive anonymous. Though your heart is in the right place, anyone with a brain knows that when the smoke clears tons of financial damage will be done, and lots of "used to be anonymous" hackers will be going broke paying their attorneys before the eventually end up in prison.
Suggestion: if indeed you are so skilled and not just ego-tripping for attention, why not instead use all your omnipotent computing / hacking skills to "out" and locate some terrorists before they kill innocent people - I can think of 2 or 3 right off the top of my head.

The only reason Macs haven't had many viruses is because the Mac hasn't commanded enough of the market share, so it hasn't been worth anyone's while. Macs were never immune to viruses, they were just not "coin of the realm", so that "for-profit" pirateer hackers decided that Macs were not where the money is, but PCs operating on Windows were. Similarly, dialup modems are about as unsecure as you can get but nobody much messes with them either.

A couple decades ago, we ignored a bunch of ideological idiots who turned out to be a major thorn in the side of America (and the free world). Al-Qaeda proved that with enough ambition and disregard for human life and law, the United States and parts of the world could succumb to their tenacity. Ignoring Anonymous’s declaration of war is dangerous. These ideological fueled idiots will eventually stumble upon a way to do drastic harm to the United States and the free world. We would all be better off if we dealt with them now instead of waiting until their stupidity becomes a real threat.
Nothing you can do about it. Not one thing. These people see unjustice and they do something about it. They don't bomb civilians, they attack centers of power that fund the military. That's smart.
