Right attitude, wrong method.... The earth is not an infinite resource. If the world's population was reduced by natural methods, we would all benefit. It seems so obvious to me. We cannot continue allowing a woman to have 19 children. This will become obvious as time goes on. China has it right... one couple... one child.

All of life, including man's, is underpinned to the stability and existence of the Earth's ecosystems, and all ecosystems are totally dependent upon their native species of animals and plants or the strands in the web of all life/biological diversity.
And, modern man is in the eco-nomics of consuming the natural, wild, life giving and sustaining surface of the Earth. Man's destiny is irrevocably interconnected to the stability and existence of the Earth's life giving and sustaining systems, functions and cycles, all provided for man by the Earth's ecosystems and biological diversity.
Everyone should read the first, "Ishmael", an award winner. When a young reporter asks Ishmael how to save the EArth, he sees Ishmael's bookcase, and every book in the case is about the Native Americans, their worldview, their societal voices and their culture or the most successful lifestyle for man and the Earth, small scale hunting and gathering. Modern man only knows how to kill the Earth and her ability to support, sustain and grant all life and nothing of how to save the EArth.
Characters such as this fellow create their own resistence...his cause is hurt by his actions...those on the fence are influenced to believe that all those who are concerned about the planet are crackers. Good summary...right cause, poor methods.

Even if you disagree with the method by which China has proposed to cut its own population growth, there are many, many alternatives to the same that would certainly help, and they're all controversial (though they shouldn't be) in their own way.
Although this guy is totally nuts, he has a point that our culture repeatedly glorifies parenting and childbirth. While there may be wonderful things about both, maybe it's time that we value on equal footing the freedom of childlessness and the contributions made to our society by those that have chosen careers (or causes) over raising a brood of children. Or maybe adoption should get more publicity. Maybe we should ask why the "norm" or "ideal" is always raising kids, when that isn't necessarily what's best for society, the environment, or individuals in all cases.
Access to family planning, including birth control and abortion services, is also vital. It's not just a solution to ecological issues, but it helps women (and people in general) get out of poverty. More mouths to feed is part of what drags down Africa and other Third World regions, where the birth rate is MUCH higher than in Western civilization. Many developed countries actually have negative population growth, but then families in the Sahara are averaging 7 kids apiece. They don't have the money or resources to do much about it, either. Yet religious righ-wingers in this country are always pushing for our overseas aid to these places to NOT cover any of this stuff, because of their interpretation of Christianity. But then again, they think the world's just about to end anyway, so why worry about being on a self-destructive path out of town?

Food aid is one of the catalysts of the coming culture wars. Continuing to support the population expansion of people in unsustainable environments. Once the food aid is no longer enough, those populations are going to revolt against civilization and riot. It will be very nasty. The best comparison I can think of is how weather gave rise to Vikings as norther populations starved in the 800's.
As for the evils of unchecked human population, sadly that is one aspect of nature that has not changed. Nature DOES NOT self restrict populations. Not animals or plants, or microbes. All of them expand to fit their ecology. Most will crash if not checked by other competing life forms. Humans are the first "self aware" life form that sees where unchecked population growth will lead, but unfortunately that goes against deeper instincts expressed by the uncivilized masses. A time will come when civilization will have to harshly defend itself from sinking under the human tide, and those will be terrible times.

Nature does restrict is growth of any one Species is call "Selective Reduction" it accomplishes this several ways. Disease, Drought, Cancer and weather to name a few. The only thing Humans have done is stop this selective reduction in the Name of Humanity. By saying we can't let these children in say Africa die because they have no food. Or we could have just let AIDS run ramp-it around the world. That would have knocked a few Billion off the planet.
These are all forms of Selective Reduction that we have stopped or tried to stop in the name of Humanity.

I really can't believe how many people here claim that they know what the natural order of the planet should be. I hate to break it to you but humans are a creation of our natural planet. Our species and the propogation of every other successful species is due to evolution and survival of the fittest. You know why humans dominate the world? Because we naturally evolved to become the most intelligent creatures on the planet. Every part of human civilization is not some alien cancer; It is a result of the evolution of the human brain.
Species survive by reproducing as much as possible. Once the environment cannot sustain a populace, the populace will naturally equalize to meet the conditions of its environment. You do not need to artificially regulate it. If people are that much of a problem for the planet. We will die off and the planet will regrow without us. Not because we need to kill ourselves but because the planet will take care of us on its own.

Seriously - get a grip. Unless there is economic resources enough for personal freedom and the chance to contribute, and the culture encourages it, the above is simply ridiculous nonsense.
Paranoid much? Seriously, having worked on bioweapons/biodefense killing all but 25 ten-thousandths of the world population with a virus isn't possible. (I am a PhD microbiologist with multiple simulation publications.) It will not happen.
First, since the life cycle of most viruses is 3 weeks, for almost everyone in the world to be affected and die in 3 weeks time would require that everyone be infected simultaneously, or within one week. If everyone cooperated and let themselves be injected (the most efficient method) it would take 7,000 metric tons of virus material. It is logistically impossible. It would require 1 billion tons of hypodermic syringes. At best, sharing syringes, you can inject about 10 people before the needle wears out or bends, and that would still be more needles than we have in the world.
Second, in the worst case scenario simulations with a 100% fatal virus, only about 30% or less of the population dies. This is because people self-quarantine. During the Black Death which had 60% death rates in the population, this was because it was spread by the fleas fo rats. Only in very small populations of under 1000 do you see 100% or near 100%. The reason for that is because everyone gets infected during the life cycle of the first wave of infections. So people don't have time to self-quarantine.
Third, there is no virus or bacteria that has ever demonstrated better than 95% mortality of infected people in significant population sizes. Even HIV doesn't kill everyone, about 4%-5% are either naturally immune or they don't get seriously ill from the virus because of a lucky mutation. In naive isolated populations, some influenza epidemics have killed 95% of the populations of small villages. (For instance American Indians at first contact.) So the absolute worst case is 95%, and that is, in simulation, not attainable in large populations. (Weirdly, the best place to be in a monster pandemic is the largest cities in the world - not the smallest villages in the boondocks. Only in the smallest villages do you see top mortality and infection rates. And yet survivalists counsel running into the countryside. Ignorance is bliss!)
And as a practical matter, strategically, if an "elite" that sets loose a monster virus doesn't succeed in killing most people, the fact is those "elite" people will be toast. Believe me, the world would still go on if 60% of the people died. And the first order of business would be to find the culprits. I would bet that the culprits would be found if 95% died. And I sure wouldn't want to be them. I don't care who you are. The collective fury of a world is no laughing matter.
So relax. We have to expand off this planet and grow into a new phase to make this world into a park. We need to do that. Your paranoid dream of monstrous elites can't do what you are talking about if they wanted to.

Science is a result of the natural evolution of the human brain. Just like every other genetic advantage that is spawned in any species. To say that this is somehow an abomination is insane. To say that we should not take full advantage of human ingenuity to propogate the species is also insane. That is like saying birds should quit using their wings because it gives them an unfair advantage. Population will naturally reach an equilibrium point when the environment can no longer sustain us. It is arrogant to think that you have to do the Earth's job for it. Species die off because they are weak and cannot sustain themselves, not because they decide there is no need for them. I think jack-sprat is referring to climate-gate and all the lies that were published then used as basis for more "science" with the scientists involved claiming a "consensus" when none existed. Every time a scientist would question the lies they were rebuffed and isolated / cut off from the publication sources, basically meaning it ended the careers of any would-be climatologist. Currently on the "not a consensus and needs more research before we jump to conclusions" list is 9029 pHDs, 7157 MS, 2586 MD / DVM and 12,715 BS's. All degrees are in climate science, physics, biology or one of the related fields. Each degree has been verified as authentic and given by a certified university.

Reducing population growth is easier to do when working from the other side of the issue... make higher education more attainable for girls and the pregnancy rate drops.... make contraceptives more available and the pregnancy rate drops... eliminate abstinence only education and the pregancy rate drops... there are lots of things that don't step on anyone's toes that have been proven to be very effective at reducing the population growth rate.

I won't be giving you any lectures on how the environment works since it's obvious you've got all the answers. It used to be that the U.S was the primary source of the World's pollution and many of our plants and industries did untold damage but rest assured most aren't in the U.S. anymore thanks to the EPA clamping down on them, they were able to avoid regulation under globalization and our tax dollars helped them ,with subsidies to ship plants,jobs and industries "offshore" and no or little environmental regulation to boot.
The U.S. has been cleaning the nest we $h*tted for two generations. Right idea but wrong method for sure. I chose not to ever have kids 20 years after seeing a graph chart of population level - very scary. We need a future with a much smaller, sustainable population worldwide. A nice, slow, gradual reduction through attrition over say 75 or 100 years. I don't care so much about saving the planet, I want the future generations of humans to not have to worry about having enough water, energy, food, etc, so maybe they can spend thier time enjoying life and actually getting stuff done!

A person, with a serious loss of grip on reality, decides to take matters into his own hands. He chose violence as his course of action. EVERYONE, I repeat EVERYONE, who isn't a serious nut case themselves, sees this as a desperate and idiotic act of violence, even if you agree with him. Then to see how far from reality some of the comments can go, someone starts blaming the inanimate chuck of metal for the problem. I'm tired of it. It is STUPID to the extreme. Mr. Lee felt that he was powerless and became a martyr for his beliefs. Sounds just like the lunatic Muslim suicide bombers. You anti-gun types who feel that the world would be so peachy without them realize that these types of people have little or no respect for their own life, and even less for others. I, for one, would hate to die because I wouldn't, or couldn't, do anything about this type of episode. No one, but the perpetrator was hurt. Let's give thanks that someone could take him out, without bystander injury. Lets hope that fewer people will take this insane route once they realize others aren't going to stand around and let it happen.
Darrell, I'm glad we have a right to bear arms and, if necessary, defend our lives. I cannot give thanks that someone took out Mr. Lee. Yes, the potential for greater harm was instantly halted. But, Mr. Lee was mentally ill and sufferred with a disease. He was not a victim of religious brainwashing like the "lunatic Muslim suicide bombers", nor will he become a martyr. He was ultimately destroyed by a flawed brain, which one day, will be effectively treated and or cured. His intentions and actions cannot and should not be overanalyzed, because they are insane.
It seems odd to me that someone so against humans on the planet would continue to let himself live. Isn't he part of the great scourge that is human existance?
I only hope he doesn't take others with him as it's not his call whether others live or not.
