Get over yourself. Our "little lives" in the big scheme of things, are individually insignificant! Just think, this article implies that "mankind" may cease to exist in a mere 172 years from now. The earth has been around for billions of years. Man has been around for thousands to millions of years. (Depending on ones beliefs). We're talking about our world coming to an end in less time than a blink of an eye in comparison. If "we" only have 172 years left, even with scientific knowledge doubling every four years, we won't have enough time to accomplish much of anything, including developing a method to deflect or destroy the incoming threat. An intriguing question is if we actually know the end of the world will come in 172 years, how should we spend the rest of our collective time? One could attempt to answer this question based on Religion or Science. If we continue to focus our technological efforts on simplistically producing the best cell phone or flat screen TV, we will be nowhere. Frankly, at the rate the earth's people are multiplying we'll run out of resources long before 2182, so: What, me worry? You're assuming that this earth will be able to sustain mankind long enough for this to matter. If population were to continue growing at the current pace, the population in 2182 would be close to 52B. We would have run out of fresh water well before we even get to that point thus also impacting food.

In 2006, we were already using 40% more than what earth can regenerate.

So hopefully many will elect not to have children.

PS... Voter in LA... the earth doesn't "generate" water... It gets consumed, voided, absorbed into the ground, condensation pulls the H2O from the ground and rains back down as fresh water.

I think what you were getting at is there will be more people on the planet to consume what water is available... which is not likely even with those numbers... and if it were, the population that's not closest to those water sources will die off but those who have access will thrive. The human race will not become extinct because "drank all the water" or ate all the food. Nature will make right the balance of population to resources if it gets close to that. It won't be pretty but we won't die off because of that.

Now... if nuclear war or total sudden loss of our ozone layer incinerates the planet and leaves the water shed and soil radioctive... Or if a giant asteroid covers the planet with ash for several years and no food grows, then yeah... we're pretty much toast. Unless you can get used to licking minerals and moss off stalagmites for your 3 square meals each day. :)

The only thing for sure is that the earth can NOT sustain the same growth rate we've enjoyed. Whether natural disasters reduce the population or manmade ones, the upper cap will be reached soon.

It won't happen in our time or in future times, because about 15 years ago were a group of asteroids coming toward the Earth and has been sent against them nuclear guided missiles, the biggest chank of them has fall on Jupiter others pieces went back into space.

I would guess that if the pioneer spacecraft emits heat then the Yarkovsky effect might do something to the trajectory over very long period of time. but no one knows what causes the Pioneer effect. and i don't know how the pioneer effect would relate to a rock coming in from the outer solar system except to say that it should act in reverse and speed the rock up.
