I'd say the Police Chief Mr. Gross should be investigate by child welfare services for putting his own daughter in harms way. The author of the article could have done a better job of explaining what the police chief was doing there with his daughter in the car, but didn't even touch on it. I wonder if the author even read the article he wrote before posting it.. did you notice how he referres to the police chief as a "he", then later as a "she", then again as a "he". I had to re-read the story a few times as well. It was the news reporter that made the typo. It was not the police chief, Gross, that had his daughter in the car. Gross was not involved in the incident at all. If you re-read it, the story mentions "Police Det. Paul McDougal, who was in an unmarked squad car, saw both vehicles rush by at speeds approaching 100 mph.." So it was Detective McDougal - not Gross - who was there chasing them. The story then goes on to say at the end "Emery and her daughter weren't hurt." Emery is the one facing charges for 2nd degree murder & child abuse to her own daughter. So really, you should be calling the reporter an idiot, not the police chief. :) I agree - we should not have to be confused by a news story. LOL

I am really not here to argue. . .as I am totally saddened and angry by the incident that has happened with the young ladies of Pontiac, MD. . .I just constantly pray everyday for GOD's hand on the souls of his children. . .regardless if you are a follower of GOD or not. . .GOD still loves us all.

I just want to say that while African Americans need to stop blaming society or Caucasians for the way the world is in regards to racism. . .it is still a racist society that we are living in. I have been through survival training while in the military and had the equivalent of about two meals in 2-1/2 weeks. So yes, I have been hungry and heard my stomach growl. As for the drinking, I have gone quite a long time without alcohol. If you are referring to water for a drink, I dare say you haven't gone two weeks either because you probably would be whining on the internet if you had. You'd probably be worm food.

Remember, 45 years ago they didn't have the same voting rights as you, going to college was not even a possibility for most. Even a decent family had a hard time putting food on the table because it was almost impossible for them to get a job or keep a steady one because of racial tensions, which usually insured poverty for them or for them to be in the fringes of poverty. Even when they were able to move out of the slums, they had to put up with harrasment through people like you and were usually forced out and back where they came from. But that's good, we need people like you to remind us how much people hated the black race and laying the blame on them. 1953 just called...they want their racism back!

This is why we have jail. If you can't behave around the rest of us without doing harm, we put you in a cage like an animal so we can't be harmed by you. If you are lucky enough that we decide to let you out, but don't learn your lesson the first time, we put you back in the cage for a longer stay. You have to earn your stay in the cage just like anything else, so there is no reason to complain unless they caught the wrong person.

I don't think this is a racial issue. I life in a tiny rural monochromatic town with 10 prisons within 20 miles. The ONLY minorities in town are within the prison fences. Yet, we dealt with the same thing a few years back; a 55 year old white woman shot another woman with a shotgun over a man who was in prison yet kept correspondence with the other woman. I'm shocked at some of the racism mentioned in this above thread. Apparently you needed to "vent" so badly because you know better than to let any of that hate speech out of your mouth in real life, but aren't afraid from the safety of othe other side of the computer monitor....

I am an American woman of African descent. I take offense cypresscrow 9.9 times out of 10 you are in jail/prison because you did something wrong. Stealing and selling drugs are both wrong! It is that person's fault they are in prison, it is that person's fault for not having an education to aid them in getting a job. It is that person's fault that they brought children into this world without the means to take care of them. It is not a racial thing is a lazy thing! Yes our ancestors were slaves.....they were taken from their homeland language and culture stripped from them. There are any number of these types in prison who aren't anything close to what you are decribing. Yet they attract women all the time. And most of these women aren't victims of poverty. But there has to be something wrong with someone who would want to marry a serial killer, yes Ramierez got married.

I am really not here to argue. . .as I am totally saddened and angry by the incident that has happened with the young ladies of Pontiac, MD. . .I just constantly pray everyday for GOD's hand on the souls of his children. . .regardless if you are a follower of GOD or not. . .GOD still loves us all.

I just want to say that while African Americans need to stop blaming society or Caucasians for the way the world is in regards to racism. . .it is still a racist society that we are living in. And Blacks are still targets for most of the racism although Latinos are quickly following along behind us with more and more racial profiling and stereotypes being aimed at them.

Let me just say that I too, even with my advanced college education, MS degree in CS (figure it out), and high income, making $100,000 plus a year, working in an influential industry, still get Caucasians turning up their noses at me in my predominately Caucasian neighborhood where I live. . .the only black person living in the block and I use to get questions as to "what do you do for a living?" whenever they greeted me. Also, I use to get disrespected by my Caucasian neighborhoods until they realized that I wasn't to be played with. . .

And best believe that it is still tough in the workforce b/c not many Caucasians cant deal with an educated African American. . .and a woman at that to their surprise. So no I am not blaming society, but YES racism is still an issue regardless of the education level one might have. . .just my two cents. . .

This is about the most ignorant statement I have ever heard. Anyone who turns to a life of selling drugs on the street, for any reason, is a bad person! Anyone who feels it is okay to take something someone else worked hard for without paying for it is a bad person! I don't care if you lost your job, I don't care if you chose to drop out of high school, I don't care if some bum off the street burned down your house, accept some responsibility for yourself and figure out a way to right the wrongs on your own. It's not the spelling in and of itself as much as it is that poor spelling conveys one's overall lack of education. There are those of us that are tired of hearing stupid arguments from uneducated hillbillies.

I think the reason people correct others grammar and spelling is to try and point out how miserably our school system is failing us. Adults, some with college degrees, are walking around without the slightest idea how to spell or use proper grammar. And people wonder how we end up with women like the ones featured in this poorly written article? Maybe if they had been properly educated, they would have made better life choices. Our current education system is leading to the degredation of our society. Well I am glad for the support from all on the whole misspelling thing yet am miffed by other responses. To say that I am a hillbilly, uneducated, lowlife because I misspelled riddance is startling. donkeyhodey, it's not just the public school system. What about the parents? Most of the blame is always on the government for their handling of education but nobody has the nads or the logic to see how absent most parents are in their child's upbringing. It's the parents responsibility not the governments to raise their kids with life lessons and to value education. I don't think it helps much with more and more families being raised by one parent who is always out working. I bet if you asked most parents what subjects their kids were learning in school they would not know. Also, judging on the interactions I've had with most adults, I doubt they would even be able to help their kids with anything above 4th grade homework. I wouldn't be surprised if most parents didn't even know what type of friends their kids have.

Blame the government all you want but it boils down to the parents instilling the importance of education in their kids and being able to help them get ahead. Don't only rely on the teachers to be able to do that.

Just because a person dates a man in prison does not mean she does not have dignity, self-respect, self-love, or a low IQ.

I started dating my fiance when I was 15, at 17 he was incarcerated for assault with a deadly weapon. He was rash and stupid and deserved the time he got. I make no excuses for his actions, nor does he. But he took the time he got and used it wisely, he got his GED, got his AA (graduated with honors) and has used his experiences to help others in prison better themselves.

I dated him throughout his tenure in prison and in the meantime got my B.A. and my J.D. - My fiance has been out now for a year and is starting college again in the fall in pursuit of his Bachelor's Degree. He started working the week he got out of prison (which is pretty uncommon) and since then has received numerous promotions and pay-raises and has worked his way up to a manager position within the firm he works for. He spends tons of time with his family, his nieces and nephews absolutely adore him and I know that he will make a great father.

I say all this to exemplify that we cannot make generalizations about people, whether or not they are prisoners, black/white/asian/hispanic, tall/short, whatever. We must take every individual for what he or she is. I will say though, if I had any indication that my guy was using me (he never asked me for money, packages, or visits - his family, for the majority of his sentence took care of everything) or that he was "involved" with other women, then I would not have stood for it and would have moved on before he could blink twice.

The women involved in this dispute obviously have some deeper issues if they felt the need to bicker and eventually kill over a man - regardless of whether or not he is in prison.

Actually, it clearly states otherwise. Read it. It says that Gross's child was in the car, who was the police chief quoted in the article. I'm assuming this was a mistake.

I'm wondering about that too.. why was the police chief driving around with his daughter in the car while on duty, what an idiot. He should have just let the police detective who was in the area at the time handle the pursuit by himself. Furthermore, why would the police chief be involved in a lowly pursuit like this, putting his daughter at risk unneccessarily. Maybe he should simply concentrate on the duties of being police chief instead of getting involved in high speed pursuits with his daughter in the car. Maybe the US president should have shown up at the scene too, with his daughters in his car. The Police chief is an idiot for getting his daughter involved in something like this. I'd say he's worse than the idiot girls fighting over some prisoner! The author of the article, David Goodman, is an idiot too.. he referred to the police chief as a "he" earlier in the aritcle, then clarified that the chief is a "she" when describing how the chief had her kid in the car, but then later referred to the chief as a he again. Come on Mr. Goodman, maybe getting your head our of your butt would help. Can't keep the chief's gender straight. So is the chief in fact a female? It would also be nice if the author explains where the chief was, how he got involved and why the chief's daughter was there in the first place.. was he even on duty at the time?

Ummm, maybe this is pointed out in a later post, or you just read what was in front of you (like we SHOULD be able to do), but clearly, ok, hazily, it's the authors lack of proofing that messed up the story. Gross did NOT have a child in his car. The author used the wrong name there. It was the driver that spotted her rival and decided to make chase that had her child in her own car while deciding to persue the car with two women in it- one of whom died while on a cell with a dispatcher...I think?

That's what I came up with after re-reading several times, which should have been obvious the first time through if the author had any skill.

I thought it was a typo when the author described the Police Chief as a "she" when describing how he was driving around with his daughter in the car. In reality, there are some good people that are incarcerated but the majority of them do belong there and are now worth the time of day.

But how do you tell them apart? You can't, it's a gamble. Correctional Officers can identify the inmates that are good people from the ones that are bad but they are not allowed to diffrentiate between the two they have to treat them all the same for safety reasons.

It doesn't take much for a good person to end up in prison. They don't end up in the Maximum Security, they will usually end up in the medium and minimum security prisons but the majority of the people on these forums and everywhere else don't know the difference.

Some of you don't know that in some states kicking someone from your own house after they've been told to leave several times is a felony if you try to forcefully kick them from your home yourself. The state of Washington is an example of that. They want you to call the police to take of that.

There had already been a lengthy feud between Emery and Booth on Facebook, and it's very likely that threats were made. If someone who had threatened me was in a car behind me and driving after me at a high rate of speed, I'd be hauling a$$ down the road too. If Ms. Abernathy HADN'T sped up, it's likely that Emery would have crashed into her car - at high speed- and that would have caused more than "a few dents". It's easy for all of you to say "she shouldn't have been driving so fast" - but none of us know what we would do in a situation where we feared for our lives.

We don't know the extent of the fight between the women, the article doesn't elaborate on it. We don't know if death threats were made. What if Emery had threatened violence or said she had a gun? Maybe something like that caused them to run and not stop or pull over. Because I sure as heck wouldn't stop or pull over if someone had made threats of violence against me. I don't think I would drive at 100 mph either, but adrenaline and panic make people do crazy things. At least Booth had the common sense to call the police. I think the best choice would be to drive to the nearest police station.

Let's not be so fast to blame the victims here.

I agree, I feel for Abernathy, who inadvertently became involved in an online feud that had nothing to do with her. I'm glad so many of you would have been able to stay calm, or know to pull over, etc. when faced with a threatening driver. Not me! I would want to get as far away from this lunatic as possible, especially since my passenger feels the need to call the police, and the woman chasing me is mad enough to bring her three year-old along on the ride. Also, Abernathy didn't see the police so how would she know she was going to be safe? It was the police who witnessed Abernathy, not the other way 'round.

As for the story - aside from the Editor not doing his/her job, it wasn't that hard to follow. I only read it once and understood who and where all the characters were placed. Sometimes it just takes common sense to self-edit an article while we are reading.

Lastly, it doesn't matter what race you are to display murderous-jealousy combined with road-rage. Any race and gender can be stupid enough to believe someone in prison wants only them. These prison love-affair stories are prevalent in all countries. Some women just don't have the mentality to find love in the reality (and women in prison string men along as well). I just hope that three-year old sees her way through this, and comes out stronger and better because of it.

This is about two very young women, one of whom already has a 3 year old child, who put themselves and everyone in the vicinity at risk in an altercation over a prison inmate.

While in college my weekend job was working records maintenance for a local state prison. You would not believe the number of times I've heard of women who were taken in and manipulated by these "offenders." (We're supposed to call them that because of political correctness.) While I don't excuse the actions of Emery, it is very likely that the guy they were feuding over played a heavy hand in stirring up the rivalry. These guys are slick about manipulation and coercion to accommodate their own needs. I can guarantee this guy doesn't care one bit for the life that was lost in connection to him.

This event is very unfortunate. Another example of parents not teaching their kids to be the exception and not the example of a stereotype. Education and empathy goes a long, long way in teaching people to make decisions with an understanding of long term consequences. Obviously, the young women that incited the chase already had a track record of not understanding consequences; evidenced by the fact she already had 3 year daughter, that she did not mind putting in harms way.

The history, upbringing and individual rationale between these two women is a mentality that has become an epidemic. It's a accepted behavior that keeps a race of people down. Hopefully in this community the death will bring some good into the community and teach other young women the gravity of consequences.

i watched bear grylls deal with a car chase and his recommendations were if you know where the police station, fire station or hospital is drive there as people will most likely not follow you in to those locations, if you dont know where those are make 5 or 6 right hand turns, most pursuers get bored chasing someone round in circles, never speed to get away as you will prob not get away as they will speed to, keep calm and call the police, and stay on busy streets, your more likely to see a policeman in busy areas and people are less likely to be dangerous when there are a ton of witnesses.

Good advice, hometowngirl. Too often the chased person panics and makes the situation worse for all concerned.

That said, the person who initiates the chase is the one most to blame, particularly in this incident.

another woman, recent news, was chased and her car rolled and her upset fellow got out of his chase car, went up to her and KILLED HER in the rolled over car. he did this right in front of a witness. then he killed himself. "try to stay calm" the know-it-alls write from the safety of their computers. LOL well, SOME people CAN "stay calm".... if you can, GOOD FOR YOU.

One issue for the teens that become these women (and men) is the "social stigma" associated with sounding TOO educated. I've seen it many times, the kid's that speak clearly without the "wanna be a Boo" slang are socially ostracized by their peers as "turning on their own" and "wanting to be white". HOW can we make the kids see these skills and thus acceptance in a larger swath of society as a PLUS to their future?

This is not about race - it's about choices. I know people of all races who are intelligent, hard-working and classy; and others who are lazy, ignorant and criminal. It does have a lot to do with upbringing, but there is an even more important component people tend to overlook - human will. No matter what we are born into, or how we are raised, we still make our own choices. We can't help our past, but we are the captains of our own future. How do I know? I was born into a very poor, dysunctional family to a verbally and physically abusive mother who took her own bitterness out on me. But as an adult, I realized I could choose how to respond to my past. My first jobs involved cleaning up messes and scrubbing toilets. But I worked hard and eventually ran my own business. And if a dyslexic, emotionally damaged woman like me can do it, anyone can! It's about choices!

Franz Guest - Never said I'd condone vigilante justice just harsh punishments. I'd give em due process but the sentence would be death to convicted violent offenders. Death to convicted child molesters. And death to anyone who causes the death of another due to high speed car chases on public roads. We've coddles our prisioners far too long and spent way too much on their incarceration. F rehabilitation - clean up ur act, be a responsible citizen or face the consequences.
