I can't believe they neglected to mention Yellowstone. If that goes it could ignite the atmosphere and also block out the sun worldwide for up to a year.
Before the first nuclear blast some scientists were worried that it might "ignite" the atmosphere or crack the entire Earth in half. We now know these fears were unfounded and the atmosphere is safe from ignition by any Earthly phenomenon.
I read the same thing. There are thousands of minnie to medium size earth quakes happening in Yellow stone all of the time. And from what I've read before those are some signs that a volcano will erupt, if memory serves me correct. Excuse me if I'm wrong.
Ignite the atmosphere? Wow, people are getting crazier.
It seems they didn't include any volcanoes of that magnitude. Krakatoa and Toba are two more caldera forming volcanoes that would have easily made this list if they were including the "super" volcanoes. Humans almost went extinct the last time Toba erupted. When Krakatoa erupted, it was known as the year without a summer. It snowed in July in New England and there was world wide famine. Mankind is not prepared for an eruption of Yellowstone or Toba... Before Yellowstone does erupt with a "super" eruption, it will give us plenty of warning. These early warning signs will include: increased seismic activity, large hydrothermal explosions, hot lake temperatures, gas eruptions, and a large swelling/bulge of the area underneath the main magma chamber.
In my opinion, the most dangerous volcano on this list by far is Mt. Vesuvius. Millions of people literally live on the slope of that thing, and the evacuation alone would be slow and dangerous.
Correction...Krakatoa did not cause the year without a summer. The year without a summerwas caused by Tambora, another caldera forming volcano. Either of these volcanoes is still small in comparison to Tobaor Yellowstone -- or any of the other supervolcanoes across the globe. If an eruption event like from a supervolcano were to occur, we'd have a better part of a decade without a summer.
Krakatoa was still a major explosion when you consider the damage it did to the island of Java. I believe it was also one of the loudest sounds ever heard at the time.
Yellowstone was the one, U.S.G.S., said it could easily become a volcano! Fuji is going to kill a lot of people! I thought it was pretty impressive as volcano's go! Rainier, I am glad I'm not stationed there as I was before! I don't think 15 minutes will not be enough time to evacuate from Rainier's mudflats, that will be the first place the forces of Rainier will push, but 100,000 people live on that, who would build on something like that! That CRAZY!!!
Also, id did not become active in 2000, it regained its activity in January 1994 and has been active since then. The eruption of the 1920's was provoqued by sulphur mining in its top, up to date it is the only known "man made" eruption.
I actually live in the Pacific Northwest in Washington state and I would have to say that the beauty is unbelievable. After ready this article though, I am really considering moving as far away from Mt. Rainer as I can get!
Yes, it is a beautiful area...and someday will be a deadly one, too. If Rainier blows, it will produce a deadly lahar (something like a 20 or 30 foot deep river of liquid concrete coming at you at 30 mph or so). It may also produce a pyroclastic flow (90+ mph of gas and ash hundreds of degrees hot). But Rainier isn't the only threat. Offshore is the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which has a 14% chance of producing a 9.0 earthquake in the next 50 years (37% chance of an 8.0). This is the same type of earthquake that produced the recent tsunami in Japan. If the Cascadia buckles in a big way, the resulting tsunami could be just as devastating. Hope I didn't totally ruin your day. If you are looking for a safe place to live long-term, though, Seattle-Tacoma would not be on my list.
I would, I am moving to Australia, oldest Continent in the world. And least Geologically Active.
They don't mention that the same sink holes in China show the same Geological instability of Mantel Readings in Stockton, Bakersfield and Mohave areas in California. Lol
We were moving to SoCal, so that morning we left at around 8:00am, I was driving down I-5 when I noticed a giant cloud behind me,didn’t look like a rain cloud so I turned on the radio and heard the news of the eruption, we were shocked and stunned, but grateful that we wereat that moment 50 miles away heading south to our new home. What luck to have just missed that such cataclysmic event.
People are insane to think they can run from NATURAL DISASTERS! It's a ridiculous idea. Reason being natural disasters can happen any where at any time. Man can not predict everything that will happen in this world. U here about earth quakes all over the world happening simultaneously. U hear about mud slides, floods, tornado's VOLCANO'S erupting all over the place, oil spills in the gulf that they can not contain and if a major hurricane happens to enter the gulf the oil will be sucked up into the hurricane or tornado and deposited into the atmosphere that can and will harm animals and humans. So where u gonna go. Only thing u can do is get closer to God, believe in him love and love every one else, to the best of your ability and PRAY!
This Mt. Rainer, this is ridiculous that people are living some where that has a Volcano in their back yard literally. The problem with people period, is that once the hear well something hasn't happened in so many hundreds or thousands of years, then they're fine. Wrong, did it ever occur to people that if it has not erupted in that many years, that it just may be time or close to the time of it erupting. And maybe worse than the last time because it's been storing up for so many years. Duh, man everything is scenery this scenery that, well what do you think made that scenery possible, NATURAL DISASTERS. That can and possibly will happen in our life time, yes our life time!
a scientific fact ..jet bursts on our space craft manuever it's flight course , etc. a thought about volcanoe bursts having an effect on our earths orbit .. such as the iceland one now causing such problems with our air craft . volcanoes , along with large earthquakes may have us into something along with the earths magnetic pole reversal .. our wobble in our axis .. good matierial for a movie anyway .. it seems hollywood has been doing something with this anyway .. onto 2012 and the olympics of ecology .. when our space craft develop a wobble , we can predict where , and , when it will fall . rev/bible , falling into the sun ?
While volcanoes do spew out CO2, a greenhouse gas, they also spew out ash particulates, which block out sunlight while airborne, as well as SO2, which reflects sunlight. History has shown that we have seen cooling effects from volcanoes as, obviously, the effects of SO2 (and particulates) overwhelms the heating effects of the CO2. Pinatubo lowered global temperatures for about a year or so. Tambora, as OILHOG correctly pointed out, above, produced the year without a summer. Toba, a supervolcano, blew about 70,000 years ago and was probably responsible for massive population reduction (all humans, today, are descended from the roughly 6,000 humans alive--you guessed it--about 70,000 years ago). The moron who wrote this article neglected to mention Yellowstone, another supervolcano (like Toba, the last supervolcano). Yellowstone massively erupts, on average, every 600,000 years or so. It has been 640,000 years since the last massive eruption.
At least a thousand people have moved into within a few miles of Mt. St. Helens even though the volcano erupted only 20 years ago and killed about 150 people. There is only one way in and out for the people. If St. Helens erupts again anytime soon, a real possibility, all these people may be killed. The state of Washington will do nothing and the people are stupid.

What what it's worth, Popocatépetl is actually East of Mexico City and West of Puebla.
Popocatépetl is a magnificent volcano often with a snowcap in the summer.

What about Mt St Helens in WA State that was a huge disaster as well when it errupted back in the late 1980's.....

There is no such thing as luck. Just favor, grace and mercy from GOD!
With the Mt St Helen's anniversary I thought it appropriate to give you all a view inside the crater. Here's a unique perspective on Mt St Helens from the edge

This 360 virtual tour was taken in 2008. Spin around and see the entire mountain

Volcanoes... the natural answer to global warming
do these volcanoes in any way contribute to climate change - global warming ??
