The world's largest atom smasher made another leap forward Monday by circulating beams of protons in opposite directions at the same time in the $10 billion machine after more than a year of repairs, organizers said.

Holy conspiracies Batman...the damn thing is really a "star-gate"...enjoy the read.
Heh, I love Lewis Page's articles over there at El Reg. :)
Good job CERN!
All of a sudden, 2012 seems possible for the creation of a mini back hole that may eventually swallow the entire globe.

Or worse...see above link, enjoy,at least with the black hole conspiracy we would die relatively quick.
kind nature, watch them find out something they were not looking for..with that, that maybe a new dimension, again not understandable..A bigger, better machine maybe needed, perhaps more than a trillion dollars.......

Black Hole? Why worry about that? If String Theory is right, and if my crack-pot ideas are right, then generating that much energy in that small space could unwind those dimensions that absorb the energy and then... BANG. Except, I don't believe in the Big Bang. I believe in a rip in the fabric, so we will all be pushed away from the opening and we will be what is at the edge of the universe.
is just me or does it seem like their math is off. 11000*17=187000 miles a second. the speed of light is 186000 miles a second.
rounding error and conversion error. if you use the 27km measurment you get 29700 kilometers per sec. vs 299792 kps for light in a vacuum,
(27km*11000)
under the speed of light.
Who checks the facts on this. They are saying that the particles were traveling 1000 mps faster than the speed of light. Come on it is simple math.
well ok I guess they just estimated the miles with the 27k it is 3000k per second slower than the speed of light.
hey,but at least you where paying attention...I didn't even notice it, good call.
This is the dumbest idea ever. I hope it breaks again.
Your kind of mind, set which was prevalent in Galileo's time (15th Century Europe), set man back centuries in the knowledge of how our solar system really worked. The thought then was that the Earth was the center of the Universe. Galileo was the father of modern astronomy and a man whose observational skills told us differently.
The Large Hadron Collider will advance man's knowledge in particle physics leading us to advances in new types of pollution-less energy sources perhaps and many other new advances and understandings of how the universe works. The people who truly know how important and exciting this new technology is are the same ones who may lead us out of our current predicaments with the failure of our planet's ability to sustain itself without melting its polar caps because of coal fired power plants and millions upon millions of C02 spewing autos.

This plan goes far beyond learning about nuclear fussion. This is something else completely. They aren't looking at dark matter for energy purposes. We can use our research on ball lightening to fill our future energy needs.
BALL lightening?? WTF??!!
so we can get energy by lightening balls?
I don't think that I really want to take that one any further.... :P
and energy from "ball lightning" is still a "WTF?"

Particle physics will lead us in many directions. The identification and the knowledge of what these particles do in our physical world will be the Rosetta Stone for the understanding of how and why every piece of matter exists. Without moving ahead in man's quest for an understanding of his existence, we will be doomed to a stagnant point in scientific history; caught at the cross roads of a 21st Century world, headed for disaster, or once again saved by man's ability to THINK his way out of trouble by problem solving. That's what makes us human.
I'll take the discoveries that the LHC will certainly bring us. I'd bet on it!

W Waldo, although I agree with the amazing ability for the science in this will generate leaps and bounds of knowledge,{and i am not saying NOT to turn this on},almost always their will be governmental and military actions taken, used and exploited with this knowledge. What makes us human is we WILL use this technology learned for destructive means. Id bet on it!
It's either go forward with the technology (The Collider is built) or suffer the consequences of sitting on our hands and doing nothing. The world's Military Machines are hard at work (in secret) as we speak and have always been in that mode since The Manhattan Project. We never know what means of destruction the devils are coming up with next anyway. At least not until they either test, and we find out. Or they use it someplace and we find out.
The LHC is being used by scientists from multiple countries and it will be our window into the future of Mankind whether the military uses discoveries from the machine or not. That's a given.
......and remember! We were supposed to build one of these Huge Bad Boys here in this country. Texas, I believe? I think it was one of the Republican Presidents that quashed it!
good points,thanks for the reply.
In my opinion we are aware of all the particles we need to be aware of at this time. There is no reason to study dark matter. The only thing this project can teach us is about the solar system, and how it was created. How is that going to help us? Are we planning on recreating it, and if so for what purpose? Does it promise us anything to do with space travel? Does it promise us an outcome of any kind? It is an experiment, which means we have no idea what the outcome of this research would be. Sure there are a lot of scientists eager to find out and confident this experiment will only benefit us, but they can't say anything for sure. The argument that we are doomed to destruction without this project cannot be proven. And what is wrong with problem solving? This project is not for energy purposes. I hope the project will be successful, but I don't think it is worth the risk there will be unexpected findings, like stranglets. If they knew what they were going to find, there would be no reason for the experiment at all.
There is plenty left to be studied here on earth. In my opinion we are moving too far ahead of ourselves. Ball lightening can be used for all of our energy needs including space travel. Please just take a look:

In my opinion we should have used the 10 billion dollars to start a bio dome colony on mars. From there, with time, we could have developed the CERN project there.
Poof, we all don't exist. At least you won't have to plan on what to do tomorrow.

When a naked Governator appears just give the man your clothes
Why don't they use that AlQaeda spy they just caught there as the next target for the smasher?
they try not to kill CIA operatives...

The collisions — seen by massive detectors — were a side effect of the quick advances being made by the LHC during its startup phase, which began Friday night, said Rolf Heuer, director-general of the European Organizationfor Nuclear Research, known as CERN.
What an odd comment. The machine accomplishing what it was designed to do is a "side effect"? Then what was the primary effect of the quick advances--free donuts for the crew? It makes it sound almost as though the collisions occurred accidentally. His phrase, as reported, doesn't instill confidence, especially when you're dealing with a machine that powerful and precise. Perhaps his english is a bit rusty or it was a bad translation?

good point, why WAS it a side effect?...or like you said, lost in translation.
