IPods have overheated and burst into flames on a number of occasions, but Apple has fought to keep reports of these incidents from becoming public, according to a Seattle TV station.

In retrospec the Fantastic Four Johnny Storm (Human Torch) model was not such a good idea.
I actually almost lost my arm after my 1gb ipod shuffle exploded and sent deadly shrapnel of molten metal all over my room. One piece actually went through my wall, into my garage and penetrated my car's engine block. Oh, the horrors! It reminded me of my days in Iraq.
I had my 16GB iPhone plugged into a wall socket for 3 hours. It started glowing red and eating through my carpet. It eventually burned a hole down about 500 feet deep. I took a flashlight down and found a ring that said "Property of Frodo" and a sign pointing to Middle Earth. Not sure what that means...
Apple has never been the straight-up company people have thought it was. Dirty dealing, misleading information, a screw-the-consumer attitude, and stock manipulation have always been Jobs' hallmark.

Is Apple hiding problems with fiery iPods?
First it was Alar in the Apples. Now this. It is time somebody in the government looked into what is going on with our fruits.

Despite the "dipped-in-unicorn-tears" image Apple products project, they are actually the evil spawn of Beelzebub Jobs and should be shunned if you value the salvation your eternal soul.

We've owned 6 iPods, including a 1G shuffle, 2G shuffle, a Mini, and 3 iPod Classic 80GB..and now also have 2 iPhone 3GS (16GB model).
I've never had an overheat issue. We did have a Classic and a 3GS that were DOA (failed to function within 48 hours of purchase), but they were swapped out by Best Buy and Apple respectively, with no issues.
If I play F.A.S.T. ( a flight combat game with Wi-Fi multiplayer) for 30 minutes with the rubber case armor on, my 3GS will get SLIGHTLY warm. That's it. Mostly, it just drains the battery!
I don't doubt the "flaming" issues reported, but it may be a small fraction and probably due to slightly different components and assembly issues during production.
Apple should recall and replace them, regardless of cause.
I will say that some of this may be due to ignorance, like having the iPod or iPhone in a 3rd party case that doesn't "breathe", strapped to their arm, under a shirt, on a hot day, and running several miles. That would create a temperature situation and be outside the operating range STATED IN THE MANUAL.
Jeff, get a life. 15 examples of problems with many millions sold - sould like a safe product to me - I own two Nano's and will not waste one neuron on your trash article.

What a joke of an article, 15? This is a danger because of 15 out of millions sold for how many years now? Journalism is nothing what it used to be in this day and age.
Then again MSNBC is attached to MS which make the to failure that is known as the ZUNE. Now I see why this is a story on M$NBC, if you can beat them then dirty their name with shotty reporting.

15 out of 300 million? Hardly a concern.

If your running and building up a sweat its probably not a good idea to have it pinned to your chest, as sweat could get inside the Ipod and cause a short.
It's not even true anyway. Let's just say I'm in a position to know for a fact. There some issues with the batteries in the macbooks a few years back but those batteries were in several other types of computers as well. The company that manufactured the batteries had a recall.
not that i doubt there have been problems with some iPods, but they way this article was written suggests a deep personal hatred of Apple, its products, and employees by the author.
is this journalism? not much is anymore...
So if my IPOD bursts into flames will I get a replacement or will they say it was no longer under warranty?
I use both PC products and Apple products. I love my iPhone, two iPods and my beautiful Mac computer.
Yes, there are problems with PC, which I use at work; however, a HUGE dirty secret that Apple keeps hidden is that there are indeed problems with Apple products, too.
Apple fools the technologicly less advanced into thinking that when its products malfunction, that that's the superior Apple way.
Apple products are brilliant; however, PCs and Microsoft have been making huge headway on that front, too.
AND, if you have ever had a problem with your MAC or Apple product, you will never get help from Apple. There customer service is almost entirely made up of user forums. And by the way, you must be prepared to throw away all Apple products in two years ...which, in spite of the cost, is the intened useful lifespan of all Apple products.
TOP line PCs can be used efficiently for 5 years. No MAC will ever make it that far. Apple makes its own models obsolete (upgrades difficult, expensive, or impossible) within three years from the beginning of the end product cycle.
But, again, if you think Apple products have no problems, as compared to Microsoft or PC products, you are just foolish and not as technolicialy savy as you think.
I think Apple products are brilliant, but they are far, far, far from perfect.
No surprise. It seems like the best selling items are the most dangerous. I want to get blown away by the music the device it's being played on. And adrac I agree. There is a tinge of animosity toward apple, but this is a network by their rivals.
The article is from PC World, a magazine that has been around for years and years, it is not from MSNBC.
I have a Ipod touch and it can get very hot especially when using it to play videos or other things that take up a lot of energy-I can easily see someone with sensitive skin(and children) getting a burn from it.
just another brick in the wall:

"...The CPCS documents contain 15 burn- and fire-related incidents that iPod owners blame on Apple's digital music player."
15 out of how many millions sold in this country??? Statistically INSIGNIFICANT and not worth the ink, paper, not to mention the time it took to compile an 800 page report. What a WASTE of time, effort, and money.
Apple snobs never could even pretend to think rationally about their beloved apple products! LOL

It's not so much the number of complaints that I'm concerned with, but the efforts it appears lawyers went to to keep this information hidden. Why go to the effort it it's only 15?

The ipod will explode? Gee thanks for the info. I guess I better just buy a zune instead, lol.
This article really puts the MS in msnbc.
So out of 80 million devices sold there are 15 serious complaints from defects? Microsoft sure can't.
what if?? someone has there ipod/iphone in their luggage and it sets off a luggage fire at 20,000 feet. maybe air france should look into this.
